penfedlogoPentagon Federal Credit Union overdraft fees have become the subject of disdain for customers. Credit unions have come under intense scrutiny after customers have reported experiences with unreasonable overdraft fees and overdraft protection.

Pentagon Federal Credit Union is one of the credit unions in the country which has fallen under suspicion for overdraft practices. Overdraft fees are incurred when banks or credit unions have to transfer money from a secondary account to the customer’s primary one due to insufficient funds.

Overdraft practices were developed to help consumers pay for small purchases like groceries after their account lapses. Even though overdraft fees were originally small, many credit unions charge fees that some say are unfair.

Overview of Pentagon Federal Credit Union Overdraft Fees

Even though banks and credit unions offer a number of different ways to pay off overdraft fees, customers complain that they accumulate quickly and become financial burdens.

Customers who incur Pentagon Federal Credit Union overdraft fees also have several options with the credit union offering them a line of credit in the amount of money that is overdrawn instead of a fixed fee. On average, overdraft fees can range between $5 to $30 depending on the situation.

This line of credit can go up to $500, which is automatically given to qualified members and also takes the place of uncollected funds fees. It is important to note that Pentagon Federal Credit Union is the nation’s third largest federal credit union and primarily serves members of the military and government employees.

Pentagon Credit Union does not have automatic overdraft protection, so customers can pay an overdraft fee of $30 or an uncollected fund fee of $10. Qualified members can enroll in overdraft protection which is the $500 line of extended credit from the financial institution.

In addition, Pentagon Federal Credit Union offers a “money saving feature” for members who are in active service in the United States uniformed services. This program is called the Warriors Advantage, waives fees for the credit union’s checking accounts in case of Pentagon Federal Credit Union overdraft fees or uncollected fund fees.

This protection lasts for up to two occurrences in a rolling three month time span. If three or more instances occur during the three month period, members must have no other incidents of Pentagon Federal Credit Union overdraft fees in order to re-qualify for the waiver.

Even though Pentagon Federal Credit Union has flexible options for overdraft protection, members are still feeling the sting of these fees. Beginning Aug. 15, 2010, financial institutions have been prohibited from enrolling consumers in overdraft protection without their consent.

Even with this regulation, customers still complain of being charged unreasonable overdraft fees.
