Patients who have had hernia mesh surgically implanted during a surgery to repair a hernia have reported a number of problems with hernia mesh.
In particular, the C-Qur hernia mesh manufactured by Atrium Medical Corporation has been the target of these reported issues.
What is Hernia Mesh?
Hernia mesh is a woven material, often made with a synthetic plastic like polypropylene that acts as a patch for the hernia repair. A hernia is when an organ or tissues push through an area of weakness and goes into a location where it doesn’t belong.
The surgical repair of the hernia places the tissue or organ back where it belongs and seals it up with the hernia mesh so it stays in place.
Problems with Hernia Mesh
The problems with hernia mesh that have been reported include patient infections, internal injuries and failure of the mesh.
Thus, the C-Qur hernia mesh in question is made with the typical polypropylene but has an Omega 3 coating on the outside.
This particular mesh is the only one with the Omega 3 fatty acids coating, and patients who report problems with hernia mesh have pointed to the coating as the catalyst for problems.
One major issue that has been reported about problems with hernia mesh is that the C-Qur mesh has a tendency to stick to the bowels and other internal body parts where it can cause injuries.
The mesh can create gastric ulcers, perforate organs and cause adhesions and scar tissue to form.
Other problems with hernia mesh that have been reported center around infections linked to the use of the product.
In addition to having problems caused by the hernia mesh itself, others report catastrophic failure of the product, making it useless for repairing a hernia.
This causes patients to require surgical removal of the C-Qur mesh and undergo a second hernia repair surgery.
A study was undertaken in the UK several years ago that looked at C-Qur and other similar mesh products.
The study was published in the British Journal of Surgery and found that initially, when implanted, these types of mesh products could prevent adhesions, but over time, their ability to do so was greatly diminished and they could cause the problems they were intended to prevent.
The FDA has already issued a warning letter to the manufacturer of C-Qur mesh following numerous reports of problems with hernia mesh made by Atrium. The agency’s letter stated that the company was not adequately responding to complaints over its hernia mesh products.
Some complaints were that the company did not adequately investigate reports of mesh infections, other reports were that the product was not sterile, and at least 35 complaints stated that human hair was found in the supposedly sterile devices.
