DePuy-ASR-stem-revisionMany people who have received a hip implant have needed additional surgery because of complications associated with them. Those who have been implanted with the DePuy ASR hip implant have often needed an ASR stem revision.

Thousands of Americans have been the recipients of the DePuy ASR hip implant system manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. However, in August 2010, the DePuy ASR system was the subject of a massive recall announced by the U.S. Food and Drug administration.

This recall included nearly 100,000 DePuy ASR hip implants worldwide with 37,000 being in the United States.

Johnson & Johnson has also settled product liability lawsuits with patients who experienced DePuy ASR stem revision surgery since March 2015.

This settlement affects only those who have undergone DePuy ASR stem revision after March 2015.

There have been countless reports of complications with DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip replacement systems as well as other hip implant systems. Some of these include:

  • Dislocated hip
  • Cancer
  • Failure of the device
  • Metallosis (poisoning of the blood or tissue from metal particles)
  • Degenerative heart disease or cardiomyopathy
  • Tissue death in surrounding tissue
  • Cobalt poisoning
  • Loss of bone strength or bone fracturing
  • Non-cancerous tumors

Complications like this often require the need for a DePuy ASR stem revision to correct the various complications from the device.

Johnson & Johnson is involved with thousands of individual lawsuits with patients who are in need of ASR stem revision or have suffered from complications from DePuy metal hip replacement systems.

Johnson & Johnson is currently facing almost 8,000 lawsuits regarding different types of DePuy metal-on-metal hip replacement systems including the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup System.

In a separate settlement in August 2012, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $600,000 over three lawsuits for plaintiffs who had undergone ASR stem revision surgeries. Each plaintiff was to receive $200,000 which, according to critics of Johnson & Johnson, is on the low end for a settlement like this. It should be between $200,000 and $500,000 per plaintiff, attorneys say.
