Onfi Stevens Johnson Syndrome LawsuitOnfi Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) has caused great concern among Onfi users and the American medical community. Many Onfi users have developed Onfi SJS, a serious skin condition that can cause severe blistering and lead to secondary infections and even death. The condition also has the potential to develop into Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

Onfi is Lundbeck LLC’s anti-seizure drug that is used to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy normally found in children. Onfi has helped hundreds of children with their seizures, but it has also caused severe Onfi side effects in many young patients.

Onfi SJS

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a severe skin condition that essentially causes the skin to burn off from the inside out. SJS symptoms begin with flu-like symptoms and develop into a red or purplish rash. This SJS rash can be especially painful and turn into blisters that cause the top layer of the skin to peel off. The patient may be in danger of SJS side effects, like secondary infections, sepsis, and death, at this stage of the allergic skin reaction. Scarring is another common SJS side effect among Onfi SJS victims.

SJS can affect the delicate mucous membranes, commonly found on the mouth, eyes, nose, and vagina. Onfi SJS can cause also blindness if the condition spreads to the eyes’ mucous membrane.

When the blistering SJS symptoms cover more than 30 percent of the body, the diagnosis changes to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (or TEN), a considerably more dangerous skin condition than SJS.

TEN patients may lose large patches of their skin in sheets, as the disease literally causes the skin to die and slough off. This leaves the patient vulnerable to dehydration, secondary infetion, sepsis, and death. TEN patients are often treated in burn wards because their wounds resemble those of burn victims.

Roughly one in 20 SJS patients die from the skin condition, though most SJS survivors still experience severe pain and long-term SJS side effects (scarring, blindness, or organ failure). The fatality rate is significantly higher in TEN patients, since about 40 percent of TEN patients die with a higher percentage of TEN survivors left with long-term side effects when compared to SJS patients.

SJS and TEN are both relatively rare conditions caused by an allergic reaction to a drug. However, because of the severity of the condition, many SJS and TEN studies have sought to find which drugs may cause these potentially deadly diseases.

The FDA has also recently warned against Onfi SJS, confirming that Onfi SJS and TEN has caused several patients to be hospitalized. The FDA warning also suggested that patients should cease using Onfi as soon as a rash is spotted.

Onfi SJS Lawsuits

Onfi SJS lawsuits, in addition to other SJS lawsuits, have been filed against Lundbeck, the drug’s manufacturer. Plaintiffs have claimed that the drug maker failed to adequately warn against Onfi SJS side effects. Because SJS and TEN can be extremely painful and expensive to treat, many Onfi SJS lawsuits seek to win compensation to cover medical costs in addition to pain and suffering.

A wrongful death Onfi SJS lawsuit may also be filed by the family members of a patient who allegedly died from SJS or TEN after taking the anti-seizure medication.
