Oncor Sued for Electric Bill Fraud

By Sarah Pierce

A Dallas couple is suing Oncor for fraud, saying their electricity bills have skyrocketed since the utility company installed digital “smart” meters. Before the smart readers were installed, the couple averaged $400 to $700 a month. In the three months after the smart meters were installed, the couple has been charged nearly $5,000: $1,800 in January, more than $900 in February, and another $1,800 in March. The couple maintains their usage habits haven’t changed.

The lawsuit claims Oncor “bamboozled” the public and concealed the true reason why bills have increased.

“I think Oncor knows what’s going on,” said the couple’s attorney, who is seeking class action status after hundreds of consumers have complained that their electric bills have skyrocketed since Oncor installed the smart meters.

If accepted by a judge, this lawsuit will be the second of its kind. A similar class action suit is pending in California, which accuses PG&E of overcharges due to their SmartMeter program.
