Nuna car seat class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Nuna Baby Essentials Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiffs allege Nuna sold defective car seats that are unsafe for children.
  • Where: The Nuna class action was filed in California federal court.

A new class action lawsuit alleges Nuna Baby Essentials Inc. sold defective car seats that are unsafe for children.

The plaintiffs filed the class action complaint against Nuna on Feb. 6 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, the Nuna Rava product line of convertible car seats is defective and unsafe for children. These “convertible” car seats are marketed and “designed to hold, secure and protect children of all ages and sizes,” the lawsuit explains.

However, the plaintiffs say the car seats are unsafe because the front harness adjuster button is prone to being covered with debris, which can impede the mechanism from properly clamping on the harness strap.

This defect causes the harness not to properly and securely tighten or to loosen altogether. Therefore, it cannot properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, the Nuna lawsuit says.

Nuna car seat class action says recall does not go far enough

The plaintiffs allege Nuna was aware of the defect and failed to take adequate action to address it. They say Nuna’s Rava car seats recall in December 2024 was inadequate because it only provided a new seat pad, cleaning kit and care instructions. It did not address the underlying defect, which they plaintiffs argue is unreasonable given the serious safety risks associated with the defect.

The plaintiffs say Nuna’s inadequate recall left consumers with a defective product and no meaningful remedy. They say they were forced to either continue using a product that Nuna admitted was unsafe or purchase a separate car seat to protect their children, incurring further damages as a result of Nuna’s conduct.

The plaintiffs want to represent anyone who purchased the car seats in California. They are suing for breach of warranty and violations of California consumer laws and seek certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Another car seat recall affecting children, issued by the NHTSA on Feb. 14, concerns several car seats by Columbus Trading-Partners where straps can break potentially leading to whiplash and neck injuries.
