A new class action lawsuit alleges Nissan sold vehicles with faulty engines that pose a safety hazard and concealed the fact.
Plaintiff Dennis Becker and three others filed the class action lawsuit against Nissan North America Inc. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. on July 8 in Delaware federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.
The plaintiffs allege that 2021-2023 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2023 Nissan Altima and 2019-2023 Infiniti QX50 vehicles suffer from latent design, workmanship and/or manufacturing defects in the variable compression system, which regulates the piston strokes in the vehicles’ engines and affects the ability of the vehicles to provide power.
The lawsuit claims the defect results from malfunctions in the main bearings and/or lower-link seizures.
Nissan concealed engine defect, lawsuit alleges
According to the Nissan class action lawsuit, the variable compression system is unique to Nissan-brand VC-Turbo engines and is supposed to produce higher power and provide better fuel efficiency than engines with typical compression systems, the lawsuit says.
Despite this care, the engines are plagued with a defect that causes knocking or high-pitched whirring noises, hesitation, rough idling, stalling, loss of power, and sudden engine failure while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the chances of collision significantly, the lawsuit alleges.
The defect can cause the vehicles to lose power or stop completely without warning, the plaintiffs say. As a result, they claim they have incurred thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs to repair or replace the damaged engine and/or engine components.
The plaintiffs allege Nissan knew or should have known about the defect as of 2019, but concealed it from consumers. They claim Nissan has not recalled the affected vehicles or offered suitable repair or replacement free of charge.
The plaintiffs are suing for violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of warranty and violations of state consumer laws. They seek certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.
Also in July, Nissan recalled 480,000 vehicles equipped with VC-Turbo engines including the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55 due to engine failure risks.

299 thoughts onNissan class action claims engine defect in Altima, Rogue, Infiniti QX50
I have a case number 55950245 Nissan that they denied regarding my 2023 Nissan Rogue. I religiously got oil changes and they said we have no records. I have all the receipts from Nissan and Valvoline. My last oil change a few weeks ago the Valvoline manager said that there were metal fragments in the drained oil.A while back I received a recall regarding the engine. I called and made an appointment and explained that . I specifically asked the service manager is it okay to drive. He said yes. A couple days later I was on the expressway and the engine suddenly stopped on interstate 94 and almost got ran over and was lucky enough to get to the shoulder. I called and got it towed to the dealership Naplelton Nissan in Schererville Indiana and they looked at the engine and said it was an engine valve and it would cost $1100 dollars to repair. I said hold it. I couldn’t take a chance on the safety of my family and loved ones especially reading all the horror stories, so I said hold on repair and will get back in a day. I immediately started looking for a new vehicle instead of putting an expensive bandaid on the Rogue. Thankfully I desperately was able to trade the car in as is while suffering 4000 dollars in trade allowance. Also , Naplelton Nissan wouldn’t release my car to the new dealership unless I paid $350 for running diagnostics .. when they literally sent something in mail to bring car in to run diagnostics. Terrible customer service.
I purchased this vehicle in 2024 from Antwerpen Nissan in Clarksville, MD. On October 17, 2025, while driving, the engine light illuminated, and the engine abruptly shut off, creating a significant safety hazard, were I almost got into a car accident.
The engine error codes indicated a P2563 and P2565, confirming a failure of the Nissan VC turbo engine. This failure occurred within one year of owning the car, highlighting a severe defect. The nationwide recall on the VC turbo engine directly relates to this incident, as the defective turbo engine put my life at risk when it failed while driving.
Despite the known recall, Antwerpen Nissan in Clarksville, Maryland is not honoring the recall by replacing the defective VC turbo. I purchased lifetime engine warranty & Antwerpen has a 20 year / 200,000 miles engine warranty. They promised me that when I brought the car brand new in 2024 . As a senior citizen I was taken advantage off by Antwerpen Nissan, with no help a bill of $6,280.58 for a new engine after 1 year of owning the car. I purchased the car at around $36,000 new and now the car has failed due to a manufacturing defect.
Nissan & Antwerpen Nissan has a responsibility to take ownership of this issue and cover the cost of a new turbo replacement or replacement of a new car. As a customer of a brand-new car, I should not have to suffer the consequences of a defective, recalled engine that endangered my life and my family
2024 nissan rogue sv vc turbo engine failed in 1 year. Nissan is not honoring this defective unsafe turbo engine & dealership is not honoring their lifetime engine replacement. Nissan doesn’t care to keep drivers safe on the road or making dependable cars that will last. My 2024 nissan rogue sv engine failed in 1 year. Error code p2563 and p2565 a clear case of manufacturing issue from nissan as they are hiding information. This is a serious safety recall issue nissan is cheating customers & making unacceptable non safe cars.
2023 40,000 miles engine is has a defect exactly all the symptoms that are in the article listed above. Making Loud Noise, engine lost of power as well
I bought a 2023 rouge the engine has been knocking every time I excelerate if you lift the hood and look at the engine it has a bad shaking it has been in to the dealership for many recalls all fixed I hope all they tell me is Nissan is working on the problem yet it still exists in the 2026 rouges
I have a 2023 rogue, I had issues with the first 3 month after i purchased the truck, it has been a nightmare, I have contacted Nissan mulitple times and they denied the engine problem over and over. I almost got into several accidents due to the engine lossing power in the highway, or shutting down during turns. I fear driving that truck, and the rattling and shaking of the engine is disturbing. It has been a nightmare to deal with nissan I have no idea what to do next.
