A woman says her Nexium long term side effects led to kidney failure and end-stage renal disease.
Plaintiff Nettie Q. alleges she began taking the Nexium prescription medication in 2012 and continued taking it through 2016. She says she was never properly warned of the kidney risks that are associated with taking the medication, according to her Nexium long term side effects lawsuit.
Nettie says she suffered severe adverse effects and complications due to her taking the medication. The Nexium long term side effects lawsuit states that due to her ingestion of Nexium, she suffered from kidney failure and end state renal disease.
The Nexium long term side effects lawsuit states that Nettie “sustained severe and permanent personal injuries, pain, suffering, economic loss, and emotional distress.”
The counts filed against the defendants include the following: 1) Product Liability- Defective Design; 2) Product Liability- Failure to Warn; 3) Breach of Express Warranty; and 4) Punitive Damages Allegations.
Nexium Drug Facts
Nexium, also known as esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor. It works to lessen the amount of acid production that is produced by the stomach.
Other conditions that the drug is used to treat includes gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be prescribed to treat esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus that can be caused by an excess of stomach acid.
Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Being part of this medication class makes Nexium one of the most widely sold medications. In 2013, more than 15 million Americans had used PPIs.
Nexium, manufactured by AstraZeneca, is the company’s largest selling drug worldwide, with sales of more than $5.7 billion. Internationally, it is the third largest selling drug.
However, along with the drug’s revenue and sales come reports of adverse effects and complications.
According to the Nexium long term side effects lawsuit, hundreds of injury reports have been filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These adverse effects pertain to numerous types of kidney injuries. Some of these complications include: Chronic Kidney Disease; Acute Kidney Injury; Renal/Kidney Failure; and Acute Interstitial Nephritis.
The Nexium long term side effects lawsuit maintains that injury reports filed with the FDA have put AstraZeneca on notice of the drug’s excessive risk of kidney injury.
However, the Nexium long term side effects lawsuit states that AstraZeneca took no action to warn consumers or consumer’s physicians of the medical risks involved with taking Nexium.
Instead, AstraZeneca “continued to represent that Nexium did not pose any risk of kidney injuries,” the Nexium long term side effects lawsuit contends.
In July 2011, the World Health Organization released a drug reaction report about Nexium. The report cataloged 500 cases of acute interstitial nephritis linked to treatment with Nexium.
The Nexium Long Term Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-11219-CCC-MF, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Newark Division.
In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
