Researchers at the Tej Kohli Cornea Institute (TKCI) has developed new SJS treatment opportunities for those suffering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Advancements in SJS treatment are especially necessary because the condition is fatal to around 20-25 percent of those who suffer from it.
Those who survive will likely suffer from serious eye problems, some of whom will be left blinded.
SJS treatment can involve complex amniotic membrane grafting surgeries, stem cell transplant surgeries, and keratophrosthesis surgeries.
The surgeons at TKCI are especially skilled in keratophrosthesis surgeries, which are a highly specialized skill. TKCI works in conjunction with LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).
Patients who require SJS treatment often require more than just surgery.
According to Dr. Sayan Basu, a scientist and clinician from TKCI heavily involved in SJS treatment, “These patients require, not only medical attention, but also psychological support. At TKCI, besides providing treatment, we provide hope to patients from all over the world.”
The keratophrosthesis for SJS treatment has been instrumental in offering SJS patients hope for good vision.
SJS had caused one patient, Mr. Tukaram, to develop extremely dry eyes, rendering corneal and stem cell transplant options impossible. Instead, keratophrosthesis was used. Due to this specialized SJS treatment, Mr. Tukaram can now return to his construction job.
TKCI hopes to offer these SJS treatment methods to an increasing number of SJS patients across the world.
The director of TKCI, Dr. Pravin Krishna, said: “SJS requires a gamut of specialized treatment options depending on the severity of the disease. At TKCI, we have pioneered many of these treatment techniques, and we now hope to deliver our successful treatments to more patients suffering from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.”
The founder of Tej Kohli Foundation, Mr. Tej Kohli, considered the advancements in SJS treatment to be “another great step in our aim to eradicate corneal blindness completely by 2030.”
What is SJS?
Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a life-threatening skin condition that can be caused by certain medications.
SJS symptoms should be considered extremely serious, since SJS can be extremely harmful and even fatal.
Symptoms begin as a fairly normal rash reaction, but can develop to resemble the severity of burns. Because of this, SJS is often treated in the burn unit of a hospital.
As the condition progresses, a purple or red rash spreads quickly across the skin, blistering and letting the top layer of skin die and shed off.
When a person develops an SJS skin rash, the top layer of the affected skin begins to blister and peel, which is often very painful.
Even after recovery, patients are left with some serious complications. Some patients develop severe or debilitating eye pain and other eye problems, secondary skin infection, or even internal organ damage.
On top of this, many SJS Cipro skin rash patients are left with permanent scarring.
Patients for whom the condition is more severe, meaning the rash covers over 30 percent of their skin, are re-diagnosed with what is known as TEN, or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis. This is a term used to reclassify the extent and severity of the condition, and also indicates an increased risk of fatality.
If you or someone you know has experienced these symptoms or has been diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome after taking Cipro or another drug, you may have reason to file a SJS lawsuit.
