A New Jersey woman recently filed a lawsuit against Bristol-Myers Squibb, alleging serious Abilify gambling loss problems that have lasted long-term. The lawsuit alleges that Abilify’s side effects caused the plaintiff significant financial losses.
The plaintiff, Karen C., began taking Abilify at the direction of her doctor in January 2009. However, after taking the drug for nearly three years, she began experiencing severe compulsive behavior problems. According to the lawsuit, Karen developed a drastic compulsive gambling problem. Karen says she has lost over $70,000, ruining her financial stability and presenting a problem that will last far into the future.
The Abilify gambling loss lawsuit was filed on Oct. 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida. It alleges multiple claims, including breach of express and implied warranties, negligence, fraudulent concealment, and punitive damages, among others.
Abilify Background
Abilify (also known by its generic name, aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic medication produced jointly by Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Abilify is used to treat a variety of mental disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. As a result of its wide use, Abilify has brought in nearly $8 billion annually in sales.
However, a growing number of patients are reporting serious Abilify side effects involving impulse control problems, which can often manifest in behaviors like Abilify compulsive gambling, sex addiction, and compulsive shopping.
Abilify Gambling Loss
Compulsive gambling can be so severe that people who suffer from it are driven to gamble even when they do not have the financial capacity to do so. Because of this, some gamble with credit cards or borrow money, which can lead to severe Abilify gambling loss. While this may not cause physical harm, it can ruin the user’s life as well as the lives of their family members.
Compulsive gambling can directly cost a patient thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars, not including costs to undergo gambling addiction treatment. One of the major problems with compulsive gambling and other impulse behaviors is that they are extremely difficult to stop without getting professional help.
