New Jersey residents have recently complained about NJ toll violation fines, saying that they produce an unreasonably high bill of $102 after only missing a single $1.50 toll payment.
Other New Jersey residents say they have faced similar situations, alleging that EZPass charges unreasonable NJ toll violation fees. Consumers may be hit with these unexpected NJ toll violations if they do not check their monthly statements to check how much credit is left on their EZPass accounts.
Even though this is a common mistake, toll pass holders say that toll booth companies have been taking advantage of these openings to charge unreasonable violation fees. EZPass is one of these companies, with tens of thousands of New Jersey residents facing these allegedly unreasonable NJ toll violation penalties.
A class action investigation has been launched against big toll booth companies for allegedly forcing unfair toll fees on consumers. Along with these tollbooth companies, transportation departments in certain states are also facing legal action from angry consumers alleging they had unknowingly incurred thousands of dollars in fines.
New Jersey is one of these states, with these New Jersey residents starting to fight back against unreasonable NJ toll violation penalties.
Allegations of Unreasonable NJ Toll Violation Fees
According to an article by New Jersey 101.5, three New Jersey residents are filing legal action against EZPass seeking a refund for hundreds of millions of dollars that were confiscated from other drivers hit with a $50 administrative fee since 2011. This NJ toll violation lawsuit is seeking class action status, which means the plaintiffs could represent the interests of many more EZPass users.
The NJ toll violation lawsuit was filed in December 2017 in federal court, alleging that the $50 fees violate the 8th Amendment’s excessive fines clause and a New Jersey state laws that prohibit the company from profiting off these exorbitant EZPass fines.
This NJ toll violation lawsuit could potentially spur a legal action in Trenton, with the allegations calling into question how the toll booth authority manages the EZPass system. The authority overseeing the EZPass system in New Jersey also manages the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, which stated the EZPass fees needed to double in 2011 to keep up with the rising costs of NJ toll violation costs.
However, the NJ toll violation lawsuit alleges officials may have used false or misleading information to justify these unreasonable fees. The plaintiffs describe the move as a “massive theft and a most egregious breach of the public trust, which has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in ill gotten gains.”
The toll booth authority spokesman Tom Feeny did not comment on the claim to New Jersey 101.5, except to say that “literally none of these claims [are] true.” However this is not the first time the authority has faced legal action for allegedly unfair NJ toll violation fees, with a claim from last year stating that the authority did not take hidden cost fees into account when determining toll violations.
The NJ toll violation lawsuit ultimately alleges these increased fees are used to generate money collected by the state. According to budget documents, allege the plaintiffs, the toll booth authority generated over $200 million in excess revenue last year from these unfair NJ toll violation fees.

I have had the same issue from NJ, PA and NY EZ Pass. I had Ezpass and they say I owe thousands for a few dollars in tolls
I received a violation notice of $90 from NJ Ezpass for $1.00 of uncollected tolls on 3 different dates. I disputed the charge because I knew my account had funds and I had traveled into another state on those dates and those tolls were collected. They responded by saying that my transponder did not work. My transponder has never been defective and it’s still working. I questioned why $90. They said it was $30 administrative fees for each date. I’m being violated. Who’s trying to get over on who.
Hi Vivian!
I think this is abusive and they need to stop treating people as criminal and instead more flexible.
They should send tolls by mail and if not paid within 90 days then add a fee but $100 for 0.90cts it’s completely immoral and they are violating people and adding more stress as if we don’t have enough already! they make millions of dollars every year!
Royer Cooper Cohen Braunfeld in Philadelphia, I believe is the lawyer for the class action lawsuit against ez pass
Thanks for this. I don’t have E-Z Pass. I was in an unfamiliar area of NJ, exited the Parkway (Williamstown) and came across something I’ve never seen. It was a small toll not clearly marked, the sign wasn’t prominent. On the return now being familiar, I was able to confirm the right lane, stop and pay the 0.65 cent toll. They sent me a violation which noted the 0.65 cent toll PLUS a $50.00 administrative fee. I explained the above, sent a check for the toll, which they cashed. They turned the violation noting the administrative fee over to a collection agency. Another time, we got lost, exited New Gretna, ready to pay the toll, the road did NOT take us through any tolls. We saw a large toll structure to the far right, which we couldn’t access it. We were like what was that?! I received a violation for $2.00 toll PLUS $50.00 administrative fee. I wrote advising there was no toll, received nothing, sent a check for $2.00 to avoid the agida, expect to have the same thing occur.
Yes! How do you join lawsuit?
How do I join the law suit for the class action against NJ E-Z Pass. I still have over 1000 in penalty pending. The only reason why they stop harrassing me is because I told them I got a lawyer. They don’t even have a legal dept in order to negotiate the penalty.
Ive been charged over 500.00 in Admin fees from Ezee pass. I paid the tolls not the Admin fee. They Ezee pass turned into collections
How do u join this lawsuit??????
