Just recently, General Motors issued a GM airbag recall in China for more than 2.5 million cars with Takata-made airbags.
General Motors, along with its Chinese counterpart, Shanghai GM, announced recently that they are recalling 2.5 million cars in China that have defective airbags manufactured by Takata. This comes on the heels of Volkswagen announcing the recall of nearly 5 million vehicles with the same defective airbag.
Takata, undergoing worldwide and massive recalls of its airbags for many different car manufacturers, filed bankruptcy in June 2017 in both Japan and Deleware.
It has agreed to sell most of the company’s assets to an auto parts supplier, Michigan-based Key Safety Systems, Inc. for $1.6 billion. Key Safety Systems is based in Michigan. Takata cites the cost of the airbag recall as the reason behind the bankruptcy.
This new GM airbag recall will begin on Oct. 29, 2017, starting with over 13,000 Opel and Saab cars equipped with the defective Takata airbags. Then, on Dec. 29, the GM airbag recall affecting over 2.5 million Buicks and Chevrolets will begin.
This new GM airbag recall was recently announced by China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The airbags included in the GM airbag recall have been reported to explode unexpectedly. The reason behind the potential exploding airbags is a defect in the inflation component of the airbags. Ammonium nitrate is what inflates the airbag. The recalled Takata airbags has been found to be affected by heat and humidity, which can cause the ammonium nitrate in the airbags involved in the GM airbag recall to explode and expel metal shrapnel into the cabin of the vehicle.
This metal shrapnel has been involved in numerous injuries and deaths. Allegedly, twelve deaths have been associated with these faulty airbags.
This Takata airbag recall, including the GM airbag recall, is the largest product recall in United States history affecting millions of vehicles around the world.
The Volkswagen airbag recall, also recently announced in China, will begin next year. The step-by-step process will be undertaken by Volkswagen Group China on the recommendation of the Chinese safety authority.
Several auto manufacturers have paid millions of dollars to be released from large multidistrict litigations filed by customers who have been affected by the defective Takata airbags.
Honda Motor Company, Ltd., recently agreed to pay $605 million in a settlement to leave a multidistrict litigation over the dangerous Takata airbags. Five other large auto manufacturers have also been let out of the MDL including Toyota, Subaru, Mazda and BMW who paid, together, $553.6 million in a settlement. Nissan, additionally, paid nearly $100 million to be released from the MDL.
If you believe you have been affected by the GM airbag recall, you may benefit from speaking with an experienced attorney. If you or someone you love has been injured by a defective Takata airbag, legal action may not take away the pain and suffering associated with an injury. However, financial compensation may help alleviate medical costs and loss of work.
