A Mississippi man is the latest to enter the Benicar Products Liability MDL citing he experienced Benicar adverse effects while taking the blood pressure drug.
Plaintiff Barney H.’s lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories falls under the Benicar multidistrict litigation (MDL).
Barney began taking Benicar, a popular high blood pressure medication, in 2010.
He claims that he experienced many Benicar adverse effects as a result.
Barney alleges he suffered from Benicar adverse effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and discomfort, malabsorption, fatigue, malnutrition, dehydration, inflammation, villous damage, villous atrophy, sprue-like enteropathy, olmesartan associated enteropathy, colitis, and intestinal damage.
He brings 14 counts against Daiichi Sankyo for Benicar adverse affects including design defect, failure to warn, gross negligence, negligence, negligence per se, negligent misrepresentation, negligent design, fraudulent concealment, constructive fraud, fraud, breaches of express and implied warranties, unjust enrichment and violation of the state consumer protection laws of the State of Mississippi.
Benicar Adverse Effects
Benicar, generically known as olmesartan, is a angiotensin II receptor antagonist drug designed, manufactured, and sold by Daiichi Sankyo, a Japanese based pharmaceutical company.
It came to the North American market over twenty years ago in 1995 and since then Benicar has been prescribed to over 11 million high-blood pressure patients each year.
Most recently, however, many serious Benicar adverse effects have come into the spotlight.
In July 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a a public health warning notifying Benicar patients that there were a number of medical and consumer reports claiming serious Benicar side effects.
These reports claimed that one of the Benicar adverse effects was a condition called sprue-like enteropathy, which can cause severe GI problems.
According to a number of studies, Benicar users claim to experience serious gastrointestinal Benicar adverse effects after talking the prescription hypertension drug.
Benicar patients who suffer GI side effects often are misdiagnosed as having celiac disease. The GI symptoms are very similar to symptoms of this autoimmune disease.
Later, the Mayo Clinic studied various Benicar users from around the nation and found that many exhibited celiac symptoms even though they did not have a genetic predisposition for celiac disease.
Surprisingly, Benicar’s label and marketing material only warn consumers of the possibility of kidney problems with Benicar use.
None of the warnings mention any Benicar adverse effects regarding the GI track including those like Barney claims he suffered.
Other Benicar adverse effects include:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Sudden and severe weight loss
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Villous atrophy
- Other GI problems regularly misdiagnosed as celiac symptoms
The Benicar Adverse Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 1:33-cv-02606 in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
