- Why: The recall is due to potential contamination with E. coli O26.
- Where: The recall affects products distributed in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania and Washington.
Mountain West Food Group has initiated a recall of more than 2,800 pounds of its Forward Farms beef products due to concerns about E. coli O26 contamination. The recalled products were shipped to several states, including California and Pennsylvania.
The recall, announced on Dec. 27, 2025, involves 16-ounce vacuum-sealed packages of “Forward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef” with a “Use of Freeze By 01/13/26” date and establishment number “EST 2083” on the packaging.
These Forward Farms beef products were produced on Dec. 16, 2025, and distributed for retail sales across six states. The issue was identified through routine testing by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which detected the presence of E. coli O26.
“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers,” the ground beef recall notice states.
E. coli O26 is a Shiga toxin-producing bacterium that can cause severe illness, including diarrhea and vomiting, and in rare cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
The FSIS advises consumers to discard or return the affected ground beef products and ensure ground beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria.
Consumers urged to check beef products for recall details
The recall notice advises consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for the recalled Forward Farms beef products and avoid consuming them.
Consumers should dispose of the products or return them to the place of purchase. The FSIS will post retail distribution lists on its website to assist consumers in identifying affected products.
Mountain West Food Group is actively working to address the issue by notifying distributors and ensuring the recalled products are removed from retail outlets.
