Essure complications abdominal painA group of Kentucky women filed an Essure lawsuit against Bayer, alleging that migration of Essure coils led to serious injuries.

According to the Essure lawsuit, Bayer marketed its Essure birth control devices as safe and effective without giving proper warning about the potential risks.

After implantation, the lawsuit alleges, the plaintiffs suffered a variety of injures due to the migration of their Essure devices.

One plaintiff, Saranda W., underwent the Essure procedure on May 14, 2014 and subsequently began experiencing constant, severe abdominal pain.

Shortly afterwards, on Aug. 26, 2014, the plaintiff says she underwent a hysterosalpingogram that revealed the Essure coil in the left fallopian tube had migrated out of place.

The plaintiff continued experiencing abdominal pain, she says, and she was admitted to the emergency room in September 2014 to perform an ultrasound of her gallbladder.

However, Saranda’s gallbladder was normal, and she was discharged.

In November 2014, the plaintiff says she underwent another HSG, revealing spillage from the left fallopian tube with the migration of Essure. A third HSG in March 2014 showed the implant in the right fallopian tube had also migrated, she claims.

The plaintiff says she had her Essure coils removed in March 2015 during a laparoscopic bilateral salpingectomy. Unfortunately, one Essure coil remained in the right fallopian tube even after this procedure, she claims.

She says she underwent a total vaginal hysterectomy in April 2016 to finally remove this coil.

Not only did the migration of the coils mean that they failed to perform their function, but they also caused considerable pain, as well as forced Saranda to undergo excessive surgeries to revise the problem, according to her Essure lawsuit.

Saranda is just one of the women involved in the lawsuit. The other plaintiffs say they have also suffered considerable ongoing pain and damages due to migration of Essure.

Thousands more women across the country have made similar claims, and a growing number are filing Essure lawsuits against Bayer over these complications.

Essure Background

Essure birth control has become an increasingly popular method of permanent birth control. Essure was first released onto the market after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it back in 1998.

The Essure device consists of two metal coils which are implanted into a woman’s fallopian tubes. After initial implantation, it takes several months for the coils to effectively prevent pregnancy.

During this time, the tissue around the coils grows, eventually blocking access to the fallopian tubes altogether and preventing pregnancy.

Migration of Essure and Other Complications

Essure side effects lawsuits allege a number of serious Essure complications, including but not limited to the following:

  • device migration
  • hysterectomy
  • abdominal pain
  • pelvic pain
  • back pain
  • bloating
  • weight gain
  • heavy menstrual bleeding
  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • perforated organs
  • ectopic pregnancy

Migration and organ perforation are two of the most dangerous Essure side effects. If the Essure device migrates from its proper place, it can perforate nearby organs, leading to some very dangerous complications.

These Essure lawsuits allege that neither the public nor the medical community was adequately warned about the potentially severe Essure procedure side effects linked with the device.

Plaintiffs involved in these Essure lawsuits allege that had they been adequately informed of these complications, they would never have been implanted with an Essure birth control device and avoided these risks altogether.

If you or someone you love has suffered from any of these Essure side effects or others after being implanted with the Essure birth control device, you may be able to file an Essure side effects lawsuit.

The Essure Device Migration Lawsuit is Case No. 7:16-cv-00227-ART-EBA, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Pikeville Division.

In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
