- Why: The recall is due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.
- Where: The recall affects products distributed in Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas.
Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op has recalled various cheese products, including Organic Gouda and Colored Cheddar, distributed across multiple states due to the risk of listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The recall, announced on Sept. 5 and published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Sept. 8, includes products like Sunrise Creamery Dilly Pickle Monterey Jack Cheese in 6 oz. and 1.25 lb. packages, Organic Gouda Cheese in 8 oz. packages and specific lots of Mozzarella/Provolone, Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Swiss and Monterey Jack Cheese in 5 lb. loaves or shredded bags.
The contamination risk stems from listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations. According to the recall notice, “Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The affected products were produced on May 30 and Aug. 13, 2025, and distributed between July 7 and Aug. 14, 2025, in Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas.
Consumers should be aware of the specific lot codes and sell-by dates associated with the recalled products. For instance, the Organic Gouda has a sell-by date of Feb. 13, 2026, while the Mozzarella/Provolone Cheese’s sell-by date is Sept. 3, 2025.
The recall was initiated after company testing detected listeria monocytogenes on finished products and cutting equipment surfaces.
Consumers advised to discard or return affected cheese products
The recall notice urges consumers not to eat the affected products. “Any customers with this product in their possession should dispose of it or return it to the retail location during normal business hours for a refund,” the recall notice states.
Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op is actively working to address the issue by recalling the affected products and ensuring no further distribution occurs.
Customers seeking more information can contact Nevin Byler, the General Manager, at 440-632-5567, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM EST.
Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier this year, Abbey Specialty Foods recalled certain of its Wicklow Gold-brand cheddar cheeses due to potential listeria contamination.
