Meijer has issued a recall for approximately 39,000 gallons of its Meijer Steam Distilled Water after discovering a floating black foreign substance in the product.
The recall affects gallon-size jugs with red caps, specifically those with lot code 39-222 #3 and UPC 041250841197, which have a best-by date of Oct. 4, 2026.
The bottled water recall, initiated Nov 13, 2025, remains ongoing as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet classified the severity of the health risk.
The affected water, distributed by Meijer Distribution in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is packaged in 128 FL OZ (1 GAL) plastic jugs and sold in packs of four per case.
Meijer voluntarily initiated the bottled water recall after the contamination was identified. Despite the presence of the foreign substance, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the Meijer Steam Distilled Water.
The FDA advises consumers who purchased the affected product to discard it or contact Meijer for further instructions.
“The FDA has not classified the bottled water recall, which normally indicates the seriousness of a health risk,” the recall says.
Consumers should remain vigilant for signs of contamination
The bottled water recall currently affects six states, including Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin, where the water was sold.
Meijer is taking steps to address the issue by notifying consumers and distributors through various channels, including email, fax, letter, press release, telephone, and direct visits.
The company has not issued a formal press release regarding the recall but is actively working to ensure that affected products are removed from shelves and that consumers are informed of the potential risk.
For more information about the bottled water recall, consumers can contact Meijer directly at their headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, or visit the FDA’s website for updates on the recall status.
