pressure cooker explosion malfunctionThe Maxi-Matic Elite pressure cooker is among a number of pressure cooker models under investigation for safety hazards.

Once a kitchen staple, the pressure cooker has seen a resurgence in popularity. A myriad of manufacturers tout their new pressure cookers on television shopping channels. But even with locking lids, explosions have been documented.

Defective parts and malfunctioning units have left some cooks with second- and third-degree burns after the pressure cooker has exploded and thrown hot contents in all directions.

A pressure cooker class action lawsuit investigation is looking for consumers who purchased a defective Maxi-Matic Elite pressure cooker or any other brand of similar device that either did not perform as intended or caused contents to unpredictably explode out of the device.

Pressure cookers and pressure ovens by Aldi, Crofton, Cuisinart, Tristar, Wolfgang Puck and Maxi-Matic are among those under investigation for causing possible injuries.

Maxi-Matic Elite Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

In 2015, a California couple filed a lawsuit against Maxi-Matic and Kohl’s, the retail store that sold them the device, after their pressure cooker exploded. The wife was preparing chicken broth and said she received second- and third-degree burns after her Maxi-Matic Elite pressure cooker exploded with no indication anything was wrong.

Maxi-Matic is a small appliance company with headquarters in City of Industry, Calif. Maxi-Matic has several complaints on its Better Business Bureau listing. Here is a sampling of what consumers there have to say:

“We bought an Elite Bistro 10 quart pressure cooker from your company and it is a piece of JUNK! We have only used it 4 times and it would not turn on.”

“I purchased the 10 quart pressure cooker in May of 2017, and it broke in July.”

Other Pressure Cooker Manufacturers Also Face Lawsuits

Maxi-Matic Elite pressure cookers are not the only models with reported problems.

In 2011, a woman filed a lawsuit against Wolfgang Puck Worldwide and its subsidiaries after she says she was badly burned by a Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker she had purchased from the Home Shopping Network. She said the instructions indicated she was to unplug the pressure cooker when it finished cooking and reduce the pressure for the steam to escape.

She did the steps as instructed, but the cooker exploded when she opened the lid 20 minutes later. She said hot juice from the gumbo she cooked soaked her body and her kitchen. The woman went to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with second- and third-degree burns to her chest/breasts, stomach, arm, leg and foot.

In 2015, a couple cooking pinto beans in their Tristar pressure cooker said it “suddenly and without warning” blew its lid. Hot beans flew out and landed on the wife, who spent 20 days in the hospital to undergo treatment for severe burns.

Manufacturers and sellers are legally responsible to distribute safe products to consumers. If you have experienced a pressure cooker explosion and received injuries or suffered damages from a Maxi-Matic Elite pressure cooker or a similar device, you could have a legal claim.
