Daiichi Sankyo is feeling the heat of the a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL), with numerous Benicar patients alleging serious gastrointestinal complications. One of the most recent claims added to the MDL comes from a Maryland man alleging he suffered diarrhea, sprue-like enteropathy, and persistent nausea from Benicar.
Plaintiff Adam S. was prescribed Benicar on Jan. 16, 2008 for typical treatment purposes. Benicar is one of the most popular treatment choices for patients suffering from high blood pressure and hypertension. This medication works by dilating blood vessels which eases the stress of the circulation process.
Along with diet and exercise, Adam’s Benicar prescription was supposed to help him live a reasonably normal lifestyle. However not long after starting the medication, Adam says he allegedly began suffering serious gastrointestinal complications including chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, sprue-like enteropathy, and persistent nausea from Benicar.
According to his Benicar lawsuit, Adam was hospitalized for these injures and continues to contend with long-term Benicar complications. Due to the alleged chronic diarrhea and persistent nausea from Benicar, Adam suffered nutrition deficiencies and other gastrointestinal injuries.
Overview of Benicar Gastrointestinal Complications
Benicar was approved by the FDA to be a treatment drug for hypertension and high blood pressure, helping lower the chances of cardiovascular disease and cardiac attack. However, it was not long after the medication was released that patients began reporting serious gastrointestinal injuries.
It was initially believed that these injuries could have been attributed to celiac disease, but this was later disproved by the Mayo Clinic in a 2012 study.
The study examined 22 Benicar patients who were suffering from celiac symptoms including chronic diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, abdominal pain and fatigue.
Researchers of the study noted that the symptoms improved once patients were taken off the medication. They also noted the patients tested negative for celiac disease. After publishing the results of the study, the FDA sent out a public warning in July 2013 regarding Benicar gastrointestinal injuries.
The agency stated that there was “clear evidence” of a link between chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and persistent nausea from Benicar. In the worst cases patients developed villous atrophy, which is a gastrointestinal condition that prevents the patient’s body from properly absorbing nutrients from food.
Adam is filing this Benicar lawsuit alleging the company knew about complications like persistent nausea from Benicar and did not adequately disclose this information to the public.
Adam claims that the company either knew or should have known about the dangers of Benicar complications, and that it failed to notify him or his physician.
Adam states that he never would have used Benicar if he had been aware of the potential gastrointestinal complications. Adam is filing this Benicar lawsuit in MDL No. 2606 where it will stand alongside other claims alleging similar Benicar complications.
This Benicar Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-01705-RBK-JS, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Camden Vicinage.
