A Wisconsin man has filed a lawsuit in New Jersey federal court against Astrazeneca Pharmaceuticals, alleging that he suffered from kidney complications after taking Nexium and Prevacid, both proton pump inhibiting drugs.
According to his Nexium and Prevacid lawsuit, plaintiff Mike A. is a resident of Wisconsin.
Mike alleges that he was prescribed Nexium and Prevacid and began taking the drugs beginning in 1995. He consistently took them, according to the Nexium and Prevacid lawsuit, all through 2012.
He was prescribed these medications by his physician, and alleges that he would not have taken the medications if he had been properly warned about the side effects and complications that the drug may cause.
According to the Nexium and Prevacid lawsuit, Mike “sustained severe and permanent personal injuries, pain, suffering, economic loss, and emotional distress.”
Nexium and Prevacid Facts
PPI medications such as Nexium and Prevacid have been found to cause serious adverse effects and complications including kidney problems.
Accordingly, a recent clinical study discovered that patients who had taken a PPI medication such as Nexium and Prevacid had a higher likelihood of developing kidney failure, or renal failure.
Prevacid, generically known as lansoprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that treats conditions such as stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a damaged esophagus as well as high levels of stomach acid.
Nexium, generically known as esomeprazole, can also lower the risk of patients bleeding after an endoscopy procedure in patients who suffer from ulcers.
Both drugs are prescribed to treat the excess of stomach acid associated with certain conditions.
However, although 15 million Americans are prescribed PPI medications for the treatment of such conditions, a study inn the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology connected certain complications to these medications. The study reported that many patients who took PPI’s had developed kidney adverse effects and complications.
The study showed that for patients taking a PPI, the adverse effects and complications included that they had a higher chance of developing kidney failure and an additional higher chance of developing chronic kidney disease. These risks were looked at in comparison to those who had taken other types of heartburn medications including H2 receptor blockers.
The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study in February 2016 connecting the development of chronic kidney disease with PPI medications.
Symptoms of kidney failure include anemia, bleeding in the stomach and intestines, nerve damage in limbs, liver damage, increased risk of infections, stroke and seizures.
The Nexium and Prevacid Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-10485-CCC-MF, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Newark Division.
