At the end of 2014, a new Lipitor lawsuit joined the ongoing mass of Lipitor lawsuits. This Lipitor lawsuit echoes the accusation that Lipitor can cause diabetes.
Lipitor is a drug that’s designed to help treat high cholesterol. Since the body produces bad cholesterol, a healthy diet and lifestyle can apparently only fix high cholesterol so much, and drugs like Lipitor are designed to help control cholesterol levels for patients who don’t respond to diet and exercise due to physiological reasons. However, there are serious concerns about the risk of Lipitor diabetes.
Allegedly, Lipitor can make women much more likely to develop type-2 diabetes. Some studies have suggested that statins in general (the group of cholesterol-lowering drugs that include Lipitor) can increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes.
However, studies specific to Lipitor have found that the drug can greatly increase the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, particularly in older post-menopausal women taking the drug.
This has led to large-scale Lipitor lawsuits. Many Lipitor lawsuits have been coordinated into a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. In MDLs, similar lawsuits are coordinated together to help streamline the legal system. Since Lipitor lawsuits typically make very similar allegations about Lipitor diabetes and hinge on similar evidence, they are ideal for inclusion in a single Lipitor lawsuit MDL.
In this Lipitor diabetes lawsuit, plaintiff Laura C. alleges that Lipitor caused her to develop type-2 diabetes. Laura’s doctors prescribed her Lipitor in 2002, and she took it through 2012. In 2014, Laura was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, which her Lipitor lawsuit claims was caused by taking Lipitor for a decade.
Type-2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires changes in lifestyle and diet, as well as adopting a regime of blood testing and medication. There is no cure for type-2 diabetes, and medical care for lifelong conditions can add up.
This Lipitor lawsuit seeks to recoup the costs of medical care for type-2 diabetes, as well as the lost wages, legal fees, and other costs that allegedly stem from Laura’s use of Lipitor. Her Lipitor lawsuit holds that the makers of Lipitor were fraudulent, negligent, and unjustly enriched themselves with Lipitor.
The Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit is Case No. 4742, filed within the larger Lipitor MDL In Re: Lipitor (Atorvastatin calcium) Marketing, Sales Practices, and Product Liabiltiy Litigation, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
