LG recall overview:

  • Who: LG recalled 500,000 electric ranges.
  • Why: Humans or pets can accidentally turn the ranges on, potentially causing deadly fires.
  • Where: The LG recall is active in the United States.

LG recalled half a million electric ranges as humans or pets can accidentally turn them on.

The defect caused multiple fires with three resulting in pet deaths, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.

The recall applies to about 500,000 LG Slide-In Ranges and Freestanding Ranges with front-mounted knobs, with the affected models listed here

According to the recall, the front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard.

So far, the federal safety agency has received at least 86 reports of unintentional activation of the front-mounted knobs, with the recalled LG ranges involved in more than 28 fires.

At least five fires caused extensive property damage totaling over $340,000, the electric range recall states. At least eight minor injuries have been reported, including burns, as well as reports of three fires involving pet deaths.

LG was sued over the issue in 2022, with a U.S. district court judge dismissing the class action lawsuit against the company in 2023 and moving it to arbitration, citing the ranges’ one-year warranty.

LG offers free warning label as remedy, recall states

The recall involves a repair, not a refund. Consumers with the recalled electric ranges should contact LG for a free warning label and placement instructions. The label reminds consumers to use the Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable activation of the heating elements when the range is not in use, the recall states.

Consumers are warned to keep children and pets away from the knobs, to check the range knobs to ensure they are off before leaving home or going to bed, and not to leave objects on the range when the range is not in use.

We had a house fire that resulted in our kitchen currently being unusable and the entire house being smoked-out! one of our pets must have inadvertently started burner by jumping on stove…..thank God the fire was contained to just kitchen!!

  2. Anthony Babiak says:

I do not feel that the remedy offered in this recall is sufficient. I’ve experienced two minor fires and several accidental unsupervised burner activations from this stove. The latest occurred after being educated in the use of the control lock. LG has changed the style of controls on current models. I feel they should be required to replace controls on the models affected by this recall.

  3. Debbie Herzbrun says:

Our LG Gas stove/oven has front knobs that turn on when bumped into and I worry about that all the time. They should have them on the top or have locks.

  4. Sharon Kelly says:

I have an LG stove and has had problem with the knobs. burning smell.

  5. Mary Fraley says:

Purchased October 2022. Multiple instances of burners unknowingly turned on due to accidentally bumping into or tapping one of the knobs.
