Zantac lawsuits overview:

  • Who: A judge in Delaware gave the OK for more than 70,000 lawsuits filed against Zantac manufacturers GSK, Pfizer, Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim to proceed.
  • Why: The judge ruled the evidence the plaintiffs presented was valid and that their claims that Zantac caused cancer warranted the assessment of a jury.
  • Where: The decision was made in Delaware Superior Court.
  • How to get help: Consumers or their loved ones who were diagnosed with certain cancers after taking Zantac or ranitidine may qualify to participate in a free Zantac cancer lawsuit investigation.

A judge in Delaware ruled that more than 70,000 lawsuits filed over claims the discontinued heartburn drug Zantac caused cancer can move forward.

The judge determined the evidence presented was valid and the plaintiff’s claims warrant a jury assessment, according to the Lawsuit Information Center.

The complaints are filed against the former makers of Zantac, pharmaceutical companies GSK, Pfizer, Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim, Reuters reports, and include at least one Zantac class action lawsuit.

The pharmaceutical companies reportedly argued the opinions of expert witnesses, who have now been given the go ahead to testify, lacked the backing of scientific support.

However, the Zantac case involves a Daubert ruling, which requires judges to examine not only the expert’s methodology but also the underlying scientific principles.

GSK, Pfizer and Sanofi, in separate statements, say they disagree with the judge’s decision, that there is no reliable evidence to show Zantac caused cancer and that they plan to appeal the Zantac Daubert ruling, Reuters reports.

Ranitidine in Zantac degrades into cancer-causing chemical, Zantac class action lawsuit claims

Certain manufacturers and pharmacies reportedly halted the sale of Zantac in 2019 following the detection of cancer-causing chemical NDMA in some of the pills.

Complaints against the makers of Zantac soon followed, with consumers who claimed to have developed cancer filing a Zantac class action lawsuit claiming the pharmaceutical companies either knew or should have known the drug’s active ingredient, ranitidine, could cause the disease, Reuters reports.

The presence of NDMA in Zantac is reportedly caused by the degradation of ranitidine, which can break down into the cancer-causing chemical over time or if exposed to heat, the lawsuits claim.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ultimately asked Zantac’s manufacturers to pull the drug off the market in 2020, Reuters reports.

Pfizer previously agreed to settle more than 10,000 lawsuits last month filed over claims Zantac causes cancer. Sanofi similarly reached an undisclosed settlement with 4,000 personal injury claims involving Zantac in April.

The settled claims were being litigated in several different U.S. state courts and separate from those filed in Delaware. The Zantac Daubert ruling may be the last chance people have to file a lawsuit over Zantac cancer.

  1. Kimmie Redden says:

I started take Zantac & Ranilidine in the 1980’s and continue until it was pulled from the market. My Doctor found a tumor in my Colon (Stage-1 cancer). I had Surgery to remove the tumor + part of my Colon. Doctor still keeping an eye to make sure the tumor doesn’t returned.

  2. Carie says:

I have taken Zantac and the generic for almost 30 years. Although I haven’t been diagnosed with cancer, I do have much trouble with my stomach, intestines and now my bladder. Just because a diagnoses hasn’t been made to date, doesn’t mean it won’t be. I feel that since I took those medications for so long I deserve compensation for what the future might hold.

My deceased husband had a kidney transplant in 2005 and was on a lot of rejection meds so Dr prescribed Zantac, which he was on for years. In February 2013 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away and passed away 5 months later

  10. wayne martin says:

Took Zantac for years, developed cancerous tumor in small intestine. Tumor removed and going regularly for Cat scan to see if it reoccurs .

    1. Tuwanna Rico says:

My father took Zantac for many years. He found out he had a tumor in his colon/rectal in 1/23/2018. Had surgery the following day to remove tumor and put a colostomy. He had to take chemo and radiation for the next year then had surgery to reverse colostomy. On 1/23/2022 had a pet scan and tumor was back. He had several more surgeries and many trips to MD Anderson 5 hours one way. Spent over $200k on co pays, meds, hotels, gas and he lost the fight April 1, 2020. If these makers know this cancer causing chemical will cause cancer why do they use it? Dam right they are responsible for my father’s death and I will sue every one of them and take everything I can from them. I wish I could shut them down completely!! And not filing bankruptcy and changing the name of corp. To a different name like most of the corp. Do to get out of paying for their negligence. It should be illegal for these corp to file bankruptcy just to coward out of paying their dues!! I love & miss my Dad so much!!
