old spice class actionAn Old Spice lawsuit accuses manufacturer Procter & Gamble of ignoring hundreds or thousands of reports of deodorant rash associated with some of its products.

The litigation started with an Old Spice lawsuit filed in a federal court in Ohio by plaintiff Rodney Colley of Virginia, who is seeking to represent a class of Old Spice consumers who experienced similar reactions to the deodorant products.

Colley claims that after only a few uses of Old Spice deodorant, he developed “severe rashes, burning and discomfort” that caused him to immediately stop using the product. Photographs of Colley included with his Old Spice lawsuit show a clearly visible dark discoloration underneath his arms.

Colley says he’s not the only one who’s come down with this condition. He believes that “hundreds, if not thousands” of Old Spice customers have been affected by these burns.

He cites complaints lodged by numerous consumers in online forums and social media outlets, consumers who say their Old Spice use causes far more skin problems than they reasonably expected.

In a review on Consumer Affairs, one woman says she has to put burn cream on the rash to stop the pain. She says it’s painful to put her arm down, and she can no longer wear shirts with sleeves.

Based on these numerous reports, Colley argues that Procter & Gamble should have acknowledged the problem and addressed it properly. Instead, he says, the company is simply withholding information about deodorant rash so that it can “continue selling the product and reaping windfall profits.”

Colley is seeking at least $25,000 in damages for himself and each other class member who developed a similar skin condition. He projects the total damage award will exceed $5 million.

In addition to the alleged pain and injury, he claims, users of these products are also economically harmed by not receiving the product they thought they were buying.

Second Old Spice Lawsuit Begins in California

Not long after Colley’s claim got underway, a California man filed his own Old Spice class action lawsuit. In this case, plaintiff Gregory Johnson is raising claims under several California laws like the Unfair Competition Law and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

Johnson faults Procter & Gamble for failing to address the reports of deodorant rash properly, either with a product recall or an investigation into what’s causing these skin reactions. He says the company has failed in its duty to warn consumers about the risk of rash associated with these products.

Procter & Gamble insists their deodorant is safe to use. A spokesperson says that a small number of users may develop irritation due to what he calls alcohol sensitivity.

There are over a dozen different specific kinds of Old Spice deodorant that have already been implicated in the Old Spice lawsuit, but the products at issue aren’t limited to that list. Any Old Spice deodorant could be the subject of a legal claim.

Attorneys are now interested in talking to persons who developed a rash, chemical burn, or similar condition after using Old Spice deodorant. Such persons may be eligible to join the Old Spice lawsuit with a legal claim of their own.

Obtaining the help of a personal injury lawyer may help you obtain money damages for the pain and suffering caused by injuries from Old Spice deodorant products.

The Old Spice Deodorant Rash Class Action Lawsuits are Gregory Johnson V. Procter & Gamble, Case No. 3:16-cv-02302 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and Colley. v. Procter & Gamble Co., Case No. 2:16-cv-00225-MHW-KAJ, in the U.S. District Court of Southern Ohio.

  1. Danny Stout says:

After all the advertising about Old spice gentleman blend, I tried it. I got a terrible and painful rash from it. I’ve used other old spice brands with no issues. But this one was terrible.

  2. Tyler Steele says:

I bought the old spice wilderness and my arms-pits having been burning now stop, super irritated and red

  3. Antoinette Johnson says:

I am a woman, and I used old spice aluminum-free deodorant, thinking I’d stay away from aluminum which is in my previous antiperspirant / deodorant. The 2nd degree chemical burns on both armpits are so bad that I developed blisters. 10 days later, my skin peeled off and I have pink circular scars. P&G are bastards, they dismissed my complaint by offering to refund me the purchase price. They indicated that it’s up to the consumer to read the ingredients. WHAT LAY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW THESE CHEMICALS? To top it off, I explained to 3 different representatives via email along with several photos that it’s NOT A RASH! ITS A 2ND DEGREE CHEMICAL BURN that I got under both arms from their old spice aluminum free deodorant. The 3 different reps who replied (to my continued effort to express my pain and suffering (physical and mental) they all had identical wording in their reply: a form letter. I have huge, permanent pink scars under my arms. The insensitivity, lack of concern and accountability and efforts to “send coupons for the purchase price plus $2 off my next purchase” is f*cking insulting and sickening.

Evening, i would say good evening, but its most definitely not due to the condition of my armpits from using my old spice deodorant, a deodorant i thought i could trust, clearly and unfortunately i was wrong. In result of using said deodorant i have been left with painful chemical burns across each of my armpits with pealing skin. Because of the severe circumstances, ive lost the ability to partake in everyday activities and haven’t slept in four days due to the immense pain that i am experiencing. The lack of compassion this company has for their customers is ludicrous, unbelievable, an out right disappointing. When it came to my attention that im am not the only victim to this company, i knew i had to come forward and let my voice me heard.

After using a new old spice deodorant on may 12th, 2019 I woke up to severe burns and a dark red rash, tried to deal with it as long as possible ended up going to the hospital late that night because I could not take the pain anymore. So the doctors gave me medication for chemical burns, I thought ok cool after this medicine it will be ok, nope, still to this day 4 years and a couple months later, I still having irritation and have to search really hard to find any deodorant that doesn’t trigger the irritation and the burning feeling.

  6. Howard Harris says:

I’ve bought and used Old Spice Wilderness with Lavender. I used it one morning and instantly my underarm became irritated and itchy. After that it became a rash that bubbled up and swollen. I could barely even sleep at night because of it. Now they’ve turn into black spots still swollen and bumped up. SMH this is wild!!

    1. Kent Griffin says:

Man I think I used the same one now I have burns under my armpit smh

  7. Zach Ba. says:

I recently bought Old Spice Deodorant Swagger, it’s the new kind, I think called Pure Aqua. After using this deodorant for 3 days (72hrs) with bathing everyday at night time, I got a really severe rash under my arms. The rash is dark red, burning, and has my skin peeling! I now have a rotten meat smell coming from both my underarms where the rash is. I’m am sure, due to this rash, it has given me a fungal or bacterial infection! I am getting a doctor’s diagnosis and filing a lawsuit immediately! Do not use this product! Very high in benzine, I have researched.

  8. Alyssa Zimmerman says:

I had been using old spice deodorant for a while, then started seeing marks on my armpits, it came to the point where it would burn so badly as I put the deodorant on. I went to the doctors and they had told me it was chemical burn. I stopped using the deodorant in January 2023 and my armpits still aren’t even fully healed. It has also left scaring.

  9. Marques Evans says:

I started using old spice about a few months ago and my under arms started to peel I didn’t think anything of it until it started to burn and cut my underarms

  10. Haley Zubyk says:

I made the mistake of using my boyfriend old spice deodorant last week. He stopped using it after he said it would sting when wearing it but nothing else. The next morning I woke up with a chemical burn under my left armpit. It’s extremely painful and I have skin coming off.
