VW Audi airbag recall steering wheelSeveral vehicles have been subject to a defective airbag vehicle recall, including the 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler. These recalls have been issued due to multiple injuries and even a few deaths that have been blamed on defective airbags.

The automakers, including the manufacturers of the 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler, have recalled hundreds of vehicles because they contain Takata-made airbags with an ammonium nitrate propellant. These airbags, however, degrade over time, and by doing so, can cause serious injuries and even death when they rupture.

The Jeep Wrangler airbag recall is not the only vehicle currently announced in the recent recall. Other vehicles including Cadillac models are the 2010-2014 Escalade, 2010-2014 Escade ESV, 2010-2013 Escalade EXT.

Other vehicles also being announced in the recall include the Chevrolet models which are: 2010-2013 Avalanche, 2010-2014 Silverado HD, 2010-2014 Silverado LD, 2010-2014 Suburban, and the 2010-2014 Tahoe.

GMC models include the 2010-2014 Sierra HD, 2010-2013 Sierra LD, 2010-2014 Yukon, and the 2010-2014 Yukon XL. Additional Chrysler, Dodge and Mercedes Benz models are also included in the recall.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, there are 42,000,000 affected vehicles. The NHTSA states that “Takata air bags installed in tens of millions of U.S. vehicles are subject to recall due to a safety defect that may cause the air bag inflators to explode and cause serious injury or death.”

The Jeep Wrangler airbag recall is in place because the Takata air bag defect was announced due to alleged reports of front airbags exploding which can injure both the driver and the front passenger. These airbag explosions, which have led to the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall, have reportedly killed passengers and drivers in several horrific accidents.

According to reports of the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall, regulators have suspected that the issue of the airbag inflator is a metal cartridge that is loaded with propellant. The inflator is designed to inflate abruptly when it becomes activated. However, the reported problem with Takata airbags is that they explode with such force that the metal cartridge that holds the propellant ruptures and sends metal shrapnel flying through the vehicle.

Allegedly, the airbag then becomes more of an explosive device than a device used to save lives.

The Takata airbags are manufactured using an ammonium nitrate propellant. This chemical, used to also manufacture and create bombs, is inserted in small enough amounts that it should allow the airbag to deploy when needed without risking injury to the vehicle’s occupants.

However, reports of the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall iterate that the Takata airbags do not have enough of the drying agent used to deploy the airbag with the sufficient and necessary amount of force. To the contrary, the Takata airbags may deploy with too much force causing alleged injuries and purported deaths.

According to the Jeep Wrangler airbag recall reports, Takata is already facing multiple lawsuits, including fines. Takata filed bankruptcy earlier this summer.
