A Kentucky woman recently filed an Invokana lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals alleging she suffered serious Invokana side effects including a stroke.
Plaintiff Judy T. took Invokana for diabetes for approximately four months from February 2015 until June 2015, according to her Invokana lawsuit.
Judy claims that as a “direct and proximate result of the Defendant’s negligent and wrongful conduct in connection with the design, development, manufacture, testing, packaging, promoting, marketing, distribution, labeling, and/or sale of Invokana for the treatment of diabetes” she suffered Invokana side effects and should receive damages.
As a result of her brief Invokana use, Judy claims she suffered severe and permanent injuries and sustained from a non-fatal stroke caused by Invokana.
She alleges that her ingestion of this defective and unreasonably dangerous drug has caused and will continue to cause injury and damage to her.
The Invokana lawsuit also claims that Janssen, and other named defendants, concealed and continue to conceal their knowledge of the risks of Invokana from the public and medical community.
Judy’s Invokana lawsuit raises claims of manufacturing and design defect, failure to warn, breaches of express and implied warranty, negligence, along with fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation.
She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, monetary restitution and all other available remedies and has demanded a jury trial.
How Does Invokana Work?
Type 2 diabetes is a serious disease affecting almost 30 million people in the U. S. It requires certain medication to control the effects of the disease.
Invokana is a popular drug used to treat diabetes. While many diabetes drugs work to increase insulin in the body, Invokana stops glucose from being reabsorbed into the blood in the kidneys.
Invokana inhibits a protein in the kidney responsible for absorbing 90 percent of the glucose in the kidney. The kidney does not absorb the glucose but rather secretes it and it leaves the body as the patient urinates.
The Risks of Invokana
Invokana side effects include kidney stones, kidney damage, kidney failure, urinary tract infections, ketoacidosis, heart attack, stroke, coma and even death.
A serious side effect commonly associated with Invokana use is diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a toxic buildup of waste products in the body. However, another serious and life threatening side effect that is linked with Invokana is stroke.
The CANVAS study found that canagliflozin, the generic term for Invokana, increased a patient’s risk for non-fatal stroke by 46 percent. It can also increase a patient’s risk of other heart related complications.
Follow up studies are still being performed to research Invokana side effects, but the public and medical community might need to wait. One clinical trial will focus on the cardiovascular risks of Invokana-type drugs, but the results will not be made available until April 2017.
