Invokana-risksA Texas man is filing an Invokana adverse side effects lawsuit claiming that his use of the diabetes drug resulted in ketoacidosis and acute kidney injury.

Plaintiff Richard T. began taking Invokana, a popular diabetes drug manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, in early April 2015. Less than two weeks after he began taking the drug, Richard claims, he developed ketoacidosis and acute kidney injury as a result of Invokana adverse side effects.

Ketoacidosis is a serious condition in which the body produces too many ketones, or blood acids. It usually occurs when there is not enough insulin in the body. It can happen naturally because of diabetes itself, but it can also be triggered by a diabetes drug like Invokana.

Symptoms of ketoacidosis are thirst, frequent urination, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness and confusion.

Acute kidney injury is a dangerous condition in which the kidneys cannot filter waste properly from the body. This condition can develop over quickly over a few days or even a few hours and can result in death if not treated.

Because of Richard’s Invokana adverse side effects, he needed several days of hospitalization. He claims that he suffered from pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life as well as economic loss including significant expenses for medical care and treatment.

Richard alleges that he will continue to suffer from these damages in the future.

Invokana is a part of a group of diabetes drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors. These drugs inhibit renal glucose reabsorption and cause glucose to be excreted through the urinary tract. Unfortunately, if a patient is already at risk for kidney disease, a drug like Invokana can put additional stress on the kidneys.

Richard and similar plaintiffs in other Invokana adverse side effects lawsuits claim that the drug makers knew that Invokana could cause severe problems in patients, yet continued to aggressively market the drug regardless.

Richard says that Janssen and Johnson & Johnson misrepresented that Invokana is a safe and effective treatment for type-2 diabetes when in fact it can cause life-threatening conditions such as ketoacidosis, kidney failure and cardiovascular problems.

He believes that his injuries were preventable and were a direct result of the drug companies’ failure and refusal to conduct proper safety studies, their failure to correctly assess and publicize safety signals, suppression of relevant information and willful misrepresentations regarding Invokana adverse side effects.

He is bringing forth claims of design defect, failure to warn, negligence, gross negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, fraud, unjust enrichment and violation of state unfair trade practices and consumer protection laws.

This Invokana Adverse Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv- 02483-BRM-LGH in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, Trenton Division.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
