ibuprofen sjsIbuprofen is a popular over-the-counter pain medication for most people, although most who choose ibuprofen to treat their everyday aches and pains may not be aware of the long term side effects that come along with it, and some studies have shown that ibuprofen may cause more pain over time.

Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, which are designed to relieve pain and swelling without the dangerous side effects of drugs like steroids or narcotics. However, ibuprofen has been linked to a side effect known as “leaky gut syndrome” (LGS) because it may allegedly result in upper gastrointestinal bleeding. These drugs have allegedly been linked as well to serious complications, including Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has already issued a warning about the possible ibuprofen side effects, saying “NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may cause ulcers, bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestine. These problems may develop at any time during treatment, may happen without warning symptoms, and may cause death.”

SJS and TEN

Stevens Johnson Syndrome is an autoimmune reaction in which the body attacks its own skin. The reaction starts with flu-like symptoms that progress to a painful rash. Blisters and sores develop on the skin and the mucus membranes. In some cases, the SJS rash can spread to the eyes and internal organs. In the most serious cases, SJS progresses to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) where large patches of skin die off. This dangerous side effect has led some SJS victims to file Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuits. While these SJS lawsuits can’t heal their wounds, they allow SJS victims to seek compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.

In general, SJS lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
