Hyundai makes numerous models of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles with defective engines that use excessive amounts of oil, costing their owners huge sums of money, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

On Apr. 12, eight owners of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai Motor Co. in a California federal court, alleging violations of federal warranty laws.

The Hyundai excessive oil consumption lawsuit alleges that numerous models of the automakerโ€™s vehicles are equipped with defective Nu, Gamma, Theta, Lambda and Kappa engines.

The defective engines allegedly use excessive amounts of oil, stall and eventually fail. The drivers say Hyundai should have issued a recall for the vehicles a long time ago but hasnโ€™t.

As a result, thousands of Hyundai and Kia owners and lessees have allegedly been forced to constantly check the oil levels, and oil must be added to the engines more frequently than even the ownerโ€™s manuals recommend, Car Complaints reports.

The engine issue has flow-on effects like reduction in engine lubrication due to crankshaft submersion and gaskets and seals damage, which leads to oil leaks.

The plaintiffs also claim that oil in their vehicles migrates to places where it shouldnโ€™t be, damaging the combustion and exhaust systems.

This allegedly causes โ€œabnormal wear of engine parts, oversaturation of carbon and deposits of oil sludge, ultimately requiring a costly engine rebuild or replacement.โ€

Automaker should honor warranty claims outside terms, Hyundai class action says

The plaintiffs allege that Hyundai should honor customersโ€™ warranty claims even when the warranties have expired.ย

According to the lawsuit, Hyundai canโ€™t adequately repair the oil consumption problems and doesnโ€™t offer any reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs caused by the issue.

The class action states customers must suffer through long wait times for replacement parts, โ€œand in most cases do not receive required engine replacements.โ€

The cars with the allegedly faulty engines include the 2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra, 2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2019-2021 Hyundai Kona, 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade, 2010-2012 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2009-2010 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Sonata, 2011โ€“2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2013 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2011-2021 Hyundai Veloster, 2020-2021 Hyundai Venue, 2010-2021 Kia Forte, 2017-2020 Kia Niro, 2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid, 2012-2021 Kia Rio, 2011-2020 Kia Sorento, 2012-2021 Kia Soul, 2011-2020 Kia Sportage, 2018-2021 Kia Stinger and 2022 Kia K5.

Meanwhile, Hyundai has expanded its recall of vehicles with an exploding seat belt part issue that has caused multiple injuries to include 6,240 of its 2021-2022 Elantra and 2020 Accent vehicles.ย

The plaintiffs are represented by Nye, Stirling, Hale & Miller LLP, Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh, PLLC.

The Hyundai Oil Consumption Lawsuit is Cho, et al., v. Hyundai Motor Company, LTD., et al. in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Iโ€™m having the same problem. Massive oil consumption. I need help to revolve this problem before my engine blows. Not in position to trade in. I didnโ€™t think about this problem happening. How can I participate in the law suite? Thanks

  2. Gilbert Felter says:

2017 Santa Fe Sport, 55,00 miles. Iโ€™ve the consumption test and combustion chamber cleaning. Hyundia dealership agrees the car is burning too much oil but tells me Hyundia will do nothing about it. They tell me the only way to get a new engine is to just let this one burn up. Great advice.

  3. Freda Winters says:

My 2016 Sonata Sport. Started burning oil excessively at about 77000 mi. I am currently doing an oil consumption test w dealership. Paid $650 for new plugs etc 5000 miles before manufacturer recommended maintenance as per dealership suggestion.

  4. Rob Hillard says:

Moms car was burning oil fast. The dealership filled it back up. Said to drive it 1000 miles and bring it back. (Warranty procedure) I got 2 miles from the dealership and I had to jump out of the car! As it was burning up ! The fire destroyed the car . This happened yesterday , so we donโ€™t know what will happen with reimbursement yet.

  5. Jennifer Cranston says:

I have had all these problems with my 2018 Hyundai Tucson and have been fighting witb the dealership to fix for months now it has blown up and they have blown me off trying to claim it passed the oil consumption tests which there is no way when I have to add oil every 2 days. Sick of dealing with Hyundai.

  6. Anissa M Jenkins says:

Like alot of the complaints here i started experiencing oil consumption issues with my 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.4L in July 2022 a month after getting my routine oil change. Yet again, it occurred December 31, 2022 after getting a routine oil change on November 24, 2022. At that time a dashboard message stated โ€œEngine has overheated.โ€ That message prompted me to contact Hyundai Corporation whom created a case number and a request to take it to dealership for a diagnostic. I wasnโ€™t able to get in until January5, 2023. I was told at service that the process would mean I would have to bring my car in every 1000 miles up to 4000 miles before Corporate would make a decision. It took dealership Three days to get back to me on the findings of the diagnostic. Previously through the past three years since having the system up date to the engine software I had mention during routine service that I could still hear the knocking in my engine and random extreme shaking of my vehicle. Nothing was ever done with my request to try 2nd system update. At this most recent visit last week the service tech said they would complete another software engine update to the system and multi-point inspection. The day after picking up car my car ran hot again less than 15 minutes of driving it with the same message of โ€œEngine has overheatedโ€ I returned vehicle to dealership that Tuesday in which my vehicle still remains pending Hyundai Corporation investigation findings. I spoke to the investigator today who now tells me that they will contact dealership and follow-up with me on Monday, January 17, 2023 with a decision on who will recoup the cost. I would definitely like to join a class action lawsuit. Fyi I am the original owner purchased car brand new in April 2017.

Our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport had Oil consumption issues starting around 60k miles We had to start adding a quart of oil every couple weeks. At around 101,300 miles the check engine light came on. Engine was running rough. The vehicle was diagnosed but not repaired at a local shop. The engine was diagnosed with an โ€œinternal misfire conditionโ€. The shop recommended taking car to a Hyundai dealership (which none can see us until March), we called Hyundai of America and they gave us a case number and said we need to take the car to have a $380 diagnostics test done at the dealership and then they can tell us if they are going to help us fix this issue. Which I donโ€™t think they are going to help with any of it from what we heard from dealership. We are unable to drive the car safely, it is currently sitting in our driveway.

    1. Dawn Davis says:

Have 2015 Santa Fe sport that has had oil consumption issues since 80k and had oil consumption test. Burning 1 qt every 1000 and hyundai says thatโ€™s fine. 2 months ago wirh 130k it lost power on highway and barley made it home. Of course Hyundai says I need to pay $7000 for remanufactured engine. So disgusted with Hyundai.

  8. Anna Hernandez says:

My Hyundai 218 Tuscon just failed on .me due to oil and i just changed the oil 3 weeks ago

  9. Jodi Mcclellan says:

My 2017 Tucson i just purchased less than 6 months ago is having the same problem!! Burns through several quarts of oil between oil changes! The problem was recognized when my service light came on and car went into emergency mode and i got stranded somewhere because it was unknowingly 3 quarts low on oil. So mad!

  10. Doug Wright says:

I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. I had the engine replaced at 85k miles due to oil consumption. Now my replacement engine is consuming oil at even a faster rate. Hyundai says the only way they would replace the engine again would be due to a crank knocking issue. Needless to say, Iโ€™m very dissatisfied as a Hyundai owner. I will never buy their product again and will tell anyone considering buying one of their cars to look at another brand of car.

    1. Jessica says:

I have the same car and because of the knock sensor recall that they couldnโ€™t fix properly when it first came out they put a remanufactured engine in mine at 82000 and now 5 yrs later looks my engine is now having the consumption issue. ๐Ÿ˜‘ Iโ€™m never buying hyundai again
