Hyundai makes numerous models of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles with defective engines that use excessive amounts of oil, costing their owners huge sums of money, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

On Apr. 12, eight owners of Hyundai and Kia brand vehicles filed a class action lawsuit against Hyundai Motor Co. in a California federal court, alleging violations of federal warranty laws.

The Hyundai excessive oil consumption lawsuit alleges that numerous models of the automakerโ€™s vehicles are equipped with defective Nu, Gamma, Theta, Lambda and Kappa engines.

The defective engines allegedly use excessive amounts of oil, stall and eventually fail. The drivers say Hyundai should have issued a recall for the vehicles a long time ago but hasnโ€™t.

As a result, thousands of Hyundai and Kia owners and lessees have allegedly been forced to constantly check the oil levels, and oil must be added to the engines more frequently than even the ownerโ€™s manuals recommend, Car Complaints reports.

The engine issue has flow-on effects like reduction in engine lubrication due to crankshaft submersion and gaskets and seals damage, which leads to oil leaks.

The plaintiffs also claim that oil in their vehicles migrates to places where it shouldnโ€™t be, damaging the combustion and exhaust systems.

This allegedly causes โ€œabnormal wear of engine parts, oversaturation of carbon and deposits of oil sludge, ultimately requiring a costly engine rebuild or replacement.โ€

Automaker should honor warranty claims outside terms, Hyundai class action says

The plaintiffs allege that Hyundai should honor customersโ€™ warranty claims even when the warranties have expired.ย

According to the lawsuit, Hyundai canโ€™t adequately repair the oil consumption problems and doesnโ€™t offer any reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs caused by the issue.

The class action states customers must suffer through long wait times for replacement parts, โ€œand in most cases do not receive required engine replacements.โ€

The cars with the allegedly faulty engines include the 2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra, 2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, 2019-2021 Hyundai Kona, 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade, 2010-2012 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2009-2010 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Sonata, 2011โ€“2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2010-2013 and 2015-2021 Hyundai Tucson, 2011-2021 Hyundai Veloster, 2020-2021 Hyundai Venue, 2010-2021 Kia Forte, 2017-2020 Kia Niro, 2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid, 2012-2021 Kia Rio, 2011-2020 Kia Sorento, 2012-2021 Kia Soul, 2011-2020 Kia Sportage, 2018-2021 Kia Stinger and 2022 Kia K5.

Meanwhile, Hyundai has expanded its recall of vehicles with an exploding seat belt part issue that has caused multiple injuries to include 6,240 of its 2021-2022 Elantra and 2020 Accent vehicles.ย

The plaintiffs are represented by Nye, Stirling, Hale & Miller LLP, Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh, PLLC.

The Hyundai Oil Consumption Lawsuit is Cho, et al., v. Hyundai Motor Company, LTD., et al. in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I have a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and it has been burning oil for over a year. Hyundai wont fix the engine and I even have the wrap warranty for the vehicle. Ive had oil consumptions done many times even took apart to clean, nothing. Wont ever buy Hyundai again.

    1. Kevin Rowe says:

After having my oil changed by the Genesis dealer where I bought my 2019 Genesis G70 and after only 3,000 miles driven since the oil change (only 20,000 miles on car total), my personal mechanic (not Genesis) found that my oil level was at the minimum mark. I am taking the car to the same Genesis dealer next week for service and an explanation. My engine is the Theta 2.0 L GDI. Please let me know who I should contact to join the lawsuit . Thank you. 2. Ari Schaffer says:

My 2020 Hyundai Elantra is burning through oil quickly. I went to the dealership twice and it past all the โ€œtestsโ€ each time. The second time I had to get it towed to the dealership. Only 20k miles on the car. Went through full engine oil in 1000 miles.

  3. Forrest says:

I am burning oil at a rapidly increasing rate. I have a 2017 Santa Fe Sport with 89,000 miles on it and my first measurement resulted in the car burning 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. Just 30 days after that measurement, the burn rate has increased to about 1.8 quarts per 1000 miles. Unacceptable volumes of oil are escaping into the combustion chamber and coming straight out of my tailpipe. Hyundai should be held accountable for their faulty engine design!

    1. Olivia says:

I am also having this issue. I have a Sante Fe Sport 2018 with 125k miles and Iโ€™m having to keep extra oil cans in my car to fill it up. Insane! They MADE A BAD ENGINE and need to fix this!

  4. Chelsey says:

I have a 2016 sonata it started running hot oil was burning bad then got to leaking and coke to find out itโ€™s a blown head gasket

  5. PHILIP says:

I have a 2016 Accent SE that is using excessive oil but my model is oddly not covered by the extended warranty. What recourse do I have? I certainly donโ€™t want the car to stall on an interstate or at a busy intersection. Thanks

  6. Saquanta says:

Same issue with 2017 Hyundai Sante Fe. Having to put extra oil in between changes when I havenโ€™t event reached 3,000 miles yet.

  7. TAMMY FORET says:

I have had to put 6 qts of oil in between oil changes. when i accelerate, my engine ticks, and hesitates sometimes. I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, with only 94,000 miles on it.

  8. Mattie Jones says:

    My 016 Hunda
I accent using oil not showing need oil motor locked.

  9. Carmen Marchesani says:

I just bought a used 2018 Santa Fe with the same oil consumption issues. Iโ€™ve been tracking it myself and added a total of 3 3/4 quarts of oil. Iโ€™ve had the oil changed as well. Weโ€™ve only driven about 2,000 miles since we bought the car. We dropped it off at a Hyundai dealer and they want me to spend $500 on an oil consumption test.

    1. Olivia says:

I have the same car, same issue. 2018/125k miles, doesnโ€™t appear Hyundai wants to fix this for us. There is only a sensor recall that will be an early alarm system before your engine blows, doesnโ€™t FIX the problem.!!

      1. Amanda says:

2018 Hyundai Sant Fe Sport, 95000 miles, same issue! I have only hd the car for 2 months, fresh oil change when I bought it, no oil reading on dipstick today!

  10. Chuong Dinh Van says:

It same to my Hyunhdai Sonata 2015 oil loss and turn black. I have to add a quarter of engine oil every 1000 mile after changing oil. Dealer told me oil loss and turn black that is the commond issue and cannot fix.

    1. Scott Swenson says:

Bought 2011 sonata car was super clean engine looked new a week after I got it I started it up and it sounded like a lifter ticking so I checked o and it didnโ€™t show on dipstick I couldnโ€™t believe a dealer would let a car go out the door with no oil so I put in 3 quarts and the next day the check engine light comes on so I immediately go to dealer and scan it and the only code it has was to change oil and that there was an oil leak not sure how it knows that so I had oil changed right there and engine light went out and I watched for oil leaks for a couple days and no leaks then on my way home the next day car just died and It turned over and sounded like it wanted to start but wouldnt so I had it towed to dealer he calls me and says yeah the engine went because there was no oil in it I could tell he knew something or was hoping I didnโ€™t and I told him thereโ€™s no way it can be out of oil it hasnโ€™t had enough time to even leak that much since my oil change and thereโ€™s not a drop in my driveway but somehow it sucked up 3 quarts of oil on 3 days and this thing doesnโ€™t smoke and it seemed to run pretty good when it was running it has 125000 and we bought a couple months ago it had 3 month or 3000 warranty on it and the dealer says yeah you missed the warranty and I did see the exact miles the day we bought it and I hadnโ€™t looked but I knew we were damn close and we are within 150 Miles on the warranty and after reading that all these people are having the exact same problems tells you itโ€™s not 5he owners itโ€™s a manufacturing problem that I canโ€™t believe hasnโ€™t been recalled except for the crippling amount of money that would have to be paid to put new motors in all these cars and the new motors they would replace your blown one with is another motor just like the one you got so whatโ€™s the sense

    2. Ken says:

Wow I have a 2018 hyundai santa fe .I have been going through oil 2 quart every 600 miles
No recall I just keep adding oil every fill up of gas.
