Huel class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Plaintiff Derrick Riley filed a class action lawsuit against Huel Inc.
- Why: Riley claims Huel’s “complete meal” powder contains dangerous levels of heavy metals.
- Where: The Huel class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.
AA new class action lawsuit accuses Huel of misleading consumers about the safety of its Huel Black Edition Powder, a product marketed as a high-protein, complete meal.
Plaintiff Derrick Riley claims Huel fails to disclose that the product contains elevated levels of heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, which pose significant health risks.
According to the Huel class action lawsuit, the company’s marketing materials emphasize the product’s nutritional completeness and safety, yet it contains heavy metals at levels far exceeding recommended limits.
Riley’s Huel class action points to a Consumer Reports investigation that found a single serving of Huel Black Edition Powder contained 6.3 micrograms of lead, which is about 1,290% of Consumer Reports’ recommended daily lead limit.
The investigation also found the product contains 9.2 micrograms of cadmium, more than double the level public health authorities consider safe for daily consumption.
Huel’s marketing allegedly conceals heavy metal content
Riley argues Huel’s marketing conceals the heavy metal content, misleading consumers into believing the product is safe for regular use.
“Consumers reasonably expect health supplements like the Product to be free of harmful heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium,” the Huel class action lawsuit says. “Had consumers known that the Product contained heavy metals, they would have paid significantly less — or not purchased the product at all.”
Riley claims Huel’s failure to disclose the presence of heavy metals violates New York and California consumer protection laws.
He seeks to represent a nationwide class and a California subclass of consumers who purchased the product, and Riley is demanding a jury trial and seeking monetary and injunctive relief.
Earlier this year, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Huel, accusing the company of misrepresenting the protein content in its Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder.
