The Route 91 Festival shooting was a horrific end to what should have been a fun celebration of country music by the throng of fans that attended at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 1, 2017.
Instead, 58 people lost their lives and 546 were injured by one of the many bullets that peppered the venue during the concert. These numbers don’t take into account all the emotional wounds that attendees suffered in the moment and will likely relive in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
According to an article in the Washington Post, the Route 91 Festival shooting began while country music artist Jason Aldean was performing on the Las Vegas strip location. The bullets were directed at an enormous crowd of 22,000 people from a Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino room on the 32nd floor.
The Route 91 Festival shooting gunman, operating by himself, directed the machine gun fire into the crowd randomly, sowing death, injury, confusion, and fear before taking his own life.
Several concert attendees and eyewitnesses who were confidentially interviewed by the Washington Post admitted that there were several moments of mental dissonance where the bullets were mistaken for firecrackers.
The Route 91 Festival shooting allegedly lasted over 10 minutes and, according to concert-goers, most attendees had no idea where the bullets originated or for whom they were intended. This left people chaotically running in all directions in an attempt to flee from a danger they were unable to identify.
As many concert-goers were trying to escape by any exit they could find, friends were succumbing to the rainfall of bullets and loved ones became separated ensuing more panic and potential for trampling, according to report.
Allegedly, outside of Mandalay Bay, the sounds of the Route 91 Festival shooting were inspiring rumors of multiple gunmen on the attack in several local casinos.
Despite the craziness of the concert venue and outside rumors during the Route 91 Festival shooting, many witnesses describe heroic actions on the part of fellow country music fans. Several people were seen throwing themselves on top of others to protect them from the gunfire, according to the Washington Post article. Strangers driving by opened their cars to the random injured and rushed them to get vital emergency medical care.
The Aftermath
Money started pouring into local non-profits in the aftermath of one of the worst mass shootings this country has seen. Close to $22 million was raised and a separate non-profit entity was started to gather these funds under one roof and oversee distribution to the victims.
Sufferers who are attempting to access this fund have often been triaged to the bottom of the list in the name of saving monies for the “most injured” or families of the deceased.
