Homeowners Not Entirely Happy with Trex Decking Settlement

By Sarah Pierce

ย

A class action settlement with Trex Decking has been awarded to homeowners โ€” but not everyone is happy with the deal.

ย

Homeowners filed a class action lawsuit against Trex Company, Inc. โ€” the nationโ€™s leading manufacturer and distributor of wood alternative decking, railing, fencing and trim โ€” claiming they paid thousands of dollars for decking, only to see it fall apart within a few years. Some claimed their decks suffered from surface flaking and that Trex failed to honor its warranty by replacing the product or providing adequate remedies.

ย

As part of the settlement, Trex has agreed to give affected customers free replacement materials and provide a partial reimbursement of labor expenses. So why are homeowners unhappy? Because the settlement only requires Trex to pay up to $225 in labor costs. Depending on the size of the deck, it can cost homeowners up to thousands of dollars in labor costs to fix or replace their decking.

ย

Despite some homeownersโ€™ disapproval, the judge ruled the settlement was fair, adequate and reasonable. More information on the Trex class action settlement can be found at http://www.trex.com/legal/classactionsettlement.aspx.

We live in the NW and use 30 seconds outdoor cleaner once every spring for green mold. We did have a problem with a couple of the cap pieces on our railing splitting, like they were soaking up too much moisture. Got the name of our regional Trex rep, emailed him a couple of pics and had more than enough replacement planks within a couple of weeks. Weโ€™ve had the same Trex for over 16 years now.

Would like to make a suggestion. The best product i have found is Thompsons deck cleaner. Make sure the one you get has sodium hypocloride in it. Do NOT scrub it. Just spray or mop it on the deck. Do this in the evening or cloudy day so it wonโ€™t dry do fast as if done in the full sun. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Do Not scrub it. You will see the mildew disappear. The just hose it off. Trust me, This works. Thompson should only cost under 6 bucks a gallon

We also have a Mold problem ! We have a 32ft.porch and it looks awful .My husband is 65 years old and is on his hands and knees scrubbing the Trex to get rid of the Mold. We have tried everything ,even bleach .Itโ€™s so much work .Had we known that it would be harder to maintain than a wood floor we never would have bought it . We payed quite allot for it 10 years ago ,and are still paying with our labor and aggravation!! Is there a Class Action Lawsuit against this company for False Advertisement โ€“ Mold ? We Feel like we were deceived by the company .

WE have the exact same problem and have tried many suggestions to get rid of the serious mold problem that we have, not to mention the discoloring, uneven color of the boards, and loosening of the screws, or the boards being loosened through stripping from wear. I donโ€™t really know how to describe it. WE clean the deck dilligently at least 4 times at open season but it still doesnโ€™t work. well. We put in the deck at the end of the summer (Aug)2008 knowing that it would be maintenance free, but we have put more maintenance into this deck than our previous deck-not to mention the money it cost to buy the materials, wash the deck, and put in the deck.

On notifying Trex of spotting problems on front and back decks, we were given several different โ€œsolutionsโ€ such as use a mild bleach. Needless to say, that did not work. Being seniors, one of us severely handicapped, this was to be our solution for a maintenance free deck. The company has studiously ignored us since our initial contact. At the moment, both decks are not fit to look at and causing a great deal of angst. We cannot afford to replace them. This Company needs to be hauled into Court and charged with misleading advertising and not fulfilling their obligations to customers.
