A Florida woman recently filed a lawsuit against Biomet after being forced to undergo M2a Magnum revision surgery when her hip implant device caused serious complications.

The plaintiff, Donna J., says she underwent a left total hip replacement on May 6, 2008, in order to help with her degenerative joint disease. She was implanted with an M2a Magnum hip system, a type of metal-on-metal hip implant system. She says she was not told about the dangers of that Magnum M2a hip revision surgery.

Unfortunately, in November 2016, Donna began experiencing serious pain in her left hip, as well as swelling and weakness that made it difficult to walk and eventually necessitated the use of a walker. At that point, it was found that her hip implant device had become loose, she claims. She then underwent an MRI scan and metal test, which found that she had extremely elevated levels of chromium and cobalt in her body, allegedly caused by the metal-on-metal hip implant, as well as fluid around the hip.

Because of these complications, Donna says she had to undergo M2a Magnum revision surgery in February 2017. She then allegedly developed bradycardia, necessitating implantation of a pacemaker. Though the M2a Magnum revision surgery helped with the pain in her hip, she is still unable to walk as she once could and has to use either a walker or a scooter to get around.

Donna filed her M2a Magnum revision surgery lawsuit on July 31, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including defective design, manufacturing defect, failure to warn, negligence, and several others.

Donna’s husband Charles also filed on one count of loss of consortium, which cites the loss of services, support, and companionship of his wife, and also notes his obligation to pay her medical expenses, including for her M2a Magnum revision surgery.

Biomet Hip Implants

The M2A Magnum Hip System from Biomet, as well as other metal-on-metal hip implant systems like it, were developed in order to effectively reconstruct human hip joints. These joints may need implants because of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, and/or fracture.

Lawsuits claim that the device’s metal-on-metal design is defective and dangerous. Metal-on-metal devices can allow the metal components to rub together, releasing small metal particles into the bloodstream and surrounding tissue. This can cause metallosis, toxicity, and device failure. In some cases, complications are serious enough to warrant an M2a Magnum revision surgery, which brings with it its own risks, as well as further medical expenses.

Filing a Biomet Hip Lawsuit

If you have gone through a metal-on-metal hip replacement and have since suffered from complications like metallosis, severe pain, or others, you may be able to file a Biomet hip lawsuit. In some cases, patients who have filed lawsuits over hip implants have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation.

If you or someone you love has experienced complications due to a metal-on-metal hip implant like the M2A Magnum from Biomet or another company, you may be able to file a lawsuit. Filing a Biomet hip lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by Biomet hip implant complications, but it can help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses and lost wages.

The M2a Magnum Revision Surgery Lawsuit is Case No. 3:18-cv-00581, in the U.S. District Court for the South Bend Division of the Northern District of Indiana.
