A number of cruise lines, including the popular Norwegian Cruise Line, offer vacation protection plans that travelers can sign up for upon purchase for an additional cost.

However, consumers may be misled as to the nature of such protection plans, possibly paying more than they’re worth for that NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan

The NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan

Going on a cruise is often an expensive undertaking, and many travelers choose to purchase cruise travel protection insurance in case of unexpected issues that come up last minute such as medical emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances.

Unfortunately, that cruise travel protection insurance you purchase may not actually be as great as it appears from advertising—the benefits may have been misrepresented. Indeed, the company may even be receiving kickbacks from the insurance at your expense.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan, along with similar plans offered by the Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines, are combinations of three separate products: Cancellation Fee Waivers, Travel Insurance Policies through a number of companies (including Transamerica and Nationstar), and Travel Assistance through On Call International.

The marketing of the NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan and these other plans suggests that the price for these three products includes a fee paid to each of the three providers, including an independent third party insurer. However, these plans may be marketed along with non-insurance products, and the price for each product is not clearly identified. Customers may also be affected by opt-out marketing tactics or even insurance that couldn’t actually result in payment of a claim for the insured party according to the parameters of the policy itself.

An investigation has been launched looking into cruise travel protection insurance for the NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan, as well as plans offered for both the Royal Caribbean and Disney, known as Vacation Protection Plans. If you have purchased cruise travel protection insurance for one of these cruise lines prior to 2017, you may be eligible to participate in an investigation.

Cruise Travel Protection Insurance Investigation

If you have purchased NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan or travel protection insurance through the Royal Caribbean or Disney, you may have been affected by deceptive marketing practices. You may not actually be getting the best price on these plans, and these companies may even be receiving an undisclosed kickback for each of the travel protection policies they sell.

A new investigation is looking into NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan, along with the Royal Caribbean and Disney plans, and their reportedly deceptive marketing tactics. Customers affected by these practices are being sought out to discuss these issues.

So how do you know if you’re qualified to join the investigation? You may qualify if you meet the following requirements:

  • You purchased an online ticket for the Norwegian, Disney or Royal Caribbean cruise lines prior to 2017
  • You purchased a Vacation Protection Plan such as the NCL Essentials Travel Protection Plan at the same time as you purchased the aforementioned ticket

If these requirements apply to you, you may be able to join this cruise travel protection insurance investigation.
