Avastin eye injections silicone floaters eye examIf you have noticed that you have eye floaters after Avastin injection in your eye, this may be caused by silicone that has leaked into the injection. These silicone eye floaters are just some of the problems reported in connection with the use of Avastin to treat eye conditions. Patients who discover they have eye floaters after Avastin injection, may be able to pursue a lawsuit.

Background of Avastin Silicone Eye Injections

Avastin (also known as bevacizumab) was actually approved by the FDA as a medication for cancer treatment. However, Avastin has also been adopted as an off-label treatment after doctors discovered it could help alleviate certain eye diseases. Doctors have prescribed Avastin to treat a variety of eye diseases, including macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy.

At this point, Avastin has only been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a cancer treatment, and is not officially approved for the treatment of these other conditions. However, it is perfectly legal for doctors to prescribe Avastin for these other uses. Off-label prescriptions are a common occurrence, and many drugs used off-label have helped a great many people for a wide range of problems.

Complications of Avastin Silicone Eye Injections

Unfortunately, the use of Avasatin eye injections has been linked with a number of problems. These side effects are not necessarily linked with the drug bevacizumab itself but more likely with the way this drug is injected. During that time, the silicone oil used to lubricate the syringes on the needle, barrel, and plunger may seep into the medicine itself.

Avastin eye injections use a syringe that must be pre-filled by a compounding pharmacist. The syringe may spend days or even several weeks in storage before it’s finally used.

This storage time presents a significant problem. Since the syringes are pre-filled, waiting around for up to several weeks, particles of the silicone oil may be able to migrate over time into the medicine itself, mixing and allowing silicone particles to be injected into a patient’s eye. This can leave behind silicone eye floaters after Avastin injection, according to a number of patients.

Patients report that the silicone eye floaters after Avastin injection can lead to a number of serious side effects, including but not limited to the following:

  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Inflammation
  • Infection (endophthalmitis)
  • Retinal tearing
  • Retinal detachment
  • Cataract formation
  • Glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
  • Hypotony (reduced pressure in the eye)
  • Corneal damage
  • Vision loss/blindness
  • Other sight-related complications
