Have you noticed a defect with the power steering of your Chevy Suburban?
Certain Chevy Suburban trucks—specifically, the 2015 models—have been linked with a severe power steering defect that may cause the steering system to shut down. The affected Chevy Suburban vehicles have also reportedly been included in a recent recall from General Motors. A total of nearly 1.2 million 2015 Chevy Suburban trucks and SUVs have been recalled across the globe for defects with the electric power steering system.
The same issue led to a recall of around 700,000 model year 2014 pickups from the company.
Chevy Suburban Power Steering Defect
More than a million pickup trucks and SUVs manufactured by General Motors have been recalled by the company because of a reportedly major power steering defect.
According to GM, the defect has been implicated in at least 30 accidents and two injuries, though none have so far resulted in fatalities.
GM Power Steering Defect
The GM power steering defect recall was announced in early September 2018, and affected 1,015,918 pickup trucks and SUVs, including the Chevy Suburban. The specific defect caused the vehicles’ power steering mechanism to stop working on a temporary basis.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles’ Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist systems may fail for a moment, and then return suddenly.
“If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash,” said the federal agency in a statement about the defect.
The 2015 Chevy Suburban Recall
General Motors initiated a voluntary recall of its 2015 Chevy Suburban, along with several others, affecting a total of more than a million vehicles. Affected vehicles include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade, all model year 2015.
The recall has also affected the Chevy Suburban and other vehicles in countries including Canada and Mexico.
Owners of vehicles affected in the recall, including the 2015 Chevy Suburban, will be notified by the company, and then instructed to visit a dealership. Official technicians will update the power steering software, which will pose no cost to the owner of the affected vehicle.
