Ford data breach overview: 

  • Who: Ford reportedly concluded it did not suffer a November data breach after a threat actor claimed to leak more than 44,000 Ford customer records on BreachedForums. 
  • Why: The automaker reportedly told BleepingComputer an investigation found there had no breach of its systems and no customer data was exposed. 
  • Where: The allegedly leaked data reportedly contained customer information.

Ford reportedly concluded it did not suffer a data breach after a threat actor claimed to have leaked more than 44,000 of the automaker’s customer records on the BreachedForums hacking forum. 

A threat actor called “EnergyWeaponUser” announced the alleged data breach Nov. 17, while also implicating the well-known hacker “IntelBroker,” BleepingComputer reports. 

IntelBroker is reportedly also involved in confirmed data breaches involving Cisco, Nokia, Europol and T-Mobile.

Ford told BleepingComputer an investigation found there had been no breach of its systems or any customer data and that the incident involved a third-party supplier and a “small batch” of publicly available dealers’ business addresses. 

The automaker says it considers the matter resolved, according to BleepingComputer.

Alleged Ford data breach threat actors reportedly did not attempt to sell info 

The information reportedly leaked on the hacking forum allegedly included full customer names, physical locations, purchase details, dealer information and record timestamps. 

EnergyWeaponUser and IntelBroker did not make an attempt to sell the alleged Ford customer information, instead offering it to registered BreachedForums members for eight forum credits, worth just more than $2, BleepingComputer reports. 

In other data breach-related news, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against retailers Hot Topic and Torrid earlier this month over claims the companies failed to properly safeguard and secure the sensitive information of their customers and loyalty account members during an October data breach. 

Also this month, Ardagh Glass agreed to pay $2.75 million to put an end to claims the company failed to prevent a 2021 data breach that allegedly compromised the personally identifiable information of the company’s employees and their dependents.

    So tired of all these data breaches! Laws must be passed to force companies into better stewardship of our data or to simply quit storing it. Threat actors are so prevalent, but we must be better. Sad that class actions must be employed to get companies to wake up, stand up, and get moving. SMH.
