Atrium Medical Corporation is facing a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL), consisting of product liability claims alleging serious hernia mesh repair complications. One of the most recent claims comes from an Indiana woman alleging she suffered serious hernia mesh repair complications which later forced her to undergo revision surgery.
Plaintiff Julia C. alleges Atrium Medical Corporation failed to warn her against potential hernia mesh repair complications, and that their hernia mesh device was potentially harmful. According to the hernia mesh lawsuit, Julia was given the C-QUR mesh after her physician reviewed the company’s marketing materials.
These marketing materials stated the C-QUR mesh was safe and reliable for hernia repair, pointing out the polypropylene mesh and omega 3 fatty acid coating features. Polypropylene is designed to cause inflammation, which helps bind the mesh and muscle to heal a hernia.
With these benefits in mind, Julia claims she underwent hernia repair surgery on June 28, 2011, and had followed all postoperative recovery instructions. However, the hernia mesh lawsuit alleges that not long after getting the C-QUR mesh implanted, Julia says she began experiencing painful hernia mesh repair complications including:
- Chronic Pain
- Infection
- Failure of Ingrowth
- Excessive Inflammation
- Allergic Reactions
- Adhesion to Internal Organs
- Erosion
- Abscess
- Tissue Damage
The hernia mesh repair complications are signs typically of adverse reactions to hernia mesh, with some patients sometimes experiencing hernia recurrence.
According to the hernia mesh lawsuit, Julia also developed hernia recurrence and eventually had to undergo revision surgery to resolve these problems on June 25, 2013. Julia opted to file this hernia mesh lawsuit soon after discovering that other patients reported similar hernia mesh repair complications.
Overview of Hernia Mesh Repair Complications
Surgical mesh has been used for hernia repair for over 50 years, but a number of patients have been alleging that some hernia mesh products are defective in nature and have filed legal action against the manufacturing companies.
Atrium Medical Corporation is one of these companies, with their C-QUR hernia mesh products becoming increasingly associated with adverse reactions. The omega 3 fatty acid coating is designed to initiate a reaction from the immune system, but plaintiffs claim it may compound the patient’s condition if infection occurs from the polypropylene reaction.
Polypropylene mesh is designed to trigger muscle inflammation, which encourages tissue growth around the mesh and increases the likelihood of successful repair. The inflammation is supposed to eventually go down, but plaintiffs say infection may develop if the swelling remains.
The hernia mesh inflammation can eventually cause abdominal pain and tenderness, and may also cause patients to develop flu-like symptoms. If not treated promptly, highly organized colonies of antibiotic-resistant bacteria called biofilms can develop.
Early symptoms of hernia mesh infection often include lack of healing in the incision site, as well as a heat emitting from the surgical area. Even though these hernia mesh repair complications can be devastating to patients, Atrium Medical Corporation allegedly failed to warn the public.
Julia’s hernia mesh lawsuit is joining MDL No. 2753, where it will stand alongside other claims alleging similar hernia mesh repair complications.
