A Florida man has filed a GM ignition switch lawsuit after sustaining injuries from a car accident allegedly caused by the vehicle’s defective ignition switch. The man filed this GM ignition switch lawsuit alleging that the automobile company knew about the manufacturing defect but failed to warn the public upon discovery.
Plaintiff Jordan R. filed this claim soon after learning about the 2014 recall that withdrew millions of General Motors vehicles. The GM ignition switch defect has been linked to at least 169 deaths and numerous other injuries from roadside accidents.
The ignition switch defect can cause the car’s engine to suddenly shut off, due to the keys in the ignition slot shifting positions. When the ignition switch turns into the off position, the car’s safety features like airbags shutdown and provide no protection to driver or passenger during impact.
This problem can be caused by the external weight of keychains, but customers have reported the ignition switch can suddenly switch off with a simple bump of the knee.
Overview of GM Ignition Switch Lawsuit
According to the GM ignition switch lawsuit, this allegedly occurred during a drive with Jordan and an acquaintance. During this drive, Jordan was the passenger but still allegedly sustained multiple injuries due to automobile collision.
This automobile accident occurred in April 2016, when the car reportedly turned off while in drive. The GM ignition switch lawsuit claims that the automobile accident was a direct result of the defective ignition switch, and ultimately caused Jordan and the driver physical injury.
Jordan filed the GM ignition switch lawsuit after discovering General Motors allegedly knew about this problem as far back as 2001 but did not warn its customers until a recall was issued in 2014. The vehicles involved in the ignition switch recall include:

Jordan is filing this GM ignition switch lawsuit, seeking over $15,000 in damages for medical bills, negligence, and failure to warn. Jordan’s GM ignition switch lawsuit alleges that not only did General Motors fail to warn him or the driver, but that he and the driver were operating under the assumption that the car was safe to drive.
A class action investigation has recently been launched against General Motors, for allegedly failing to warn customers against the ignition switch defect. General Motors customers or their loved ones who suffered injuries allegedly from defective ignition switches may be eligible to join the class action investigation or file their own GM ignition switch lawsuit.
This GM Ignition Switch Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00613-JES-CM, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
In general, GM ignition switch injury lawsuits and airbag failure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
