The diabetes medication Glyxambi has been linked with some severe Glyxambi side effects, including a flesh eating infection of the genitals.
This flesh eating infection side effect can reportedly be caused by a number of diabetes medications, all belonging to a particular class of drugs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about the flesh eating infection as one of the possible side effects of Glyxambi and other sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
The flesh eating infection condition is known as necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, or Fournierโs gangrene. So why the link to diabetes medications? Essentially, in the process of ridding the body of excess sugar in the blood, more sugar is found in the urine. The genitals are also affected, with excess sugar that draws in more bacteria and other organisms. Similarly, urinary tract infections and yeast infections are also potential Glyxambi side effects.
The flesh eating infection Fournierโs gangrene can be caused by a few different bacteria, including Clostridium perfringens, Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio vulnificus.
As if flesh eating infection of the genitals didnโt already sound bad enough, this condition can also lead to fatality if the infection spreads.
According to the FDAโs report, there were 12 cases of Fournierโs gangrene between March 2013 and May 2018, affecting 7 men and 5 women. All of these patients developed the infection within several months of exposure to the medication, and each ended up hospitalized and required surgery. Unfortunately, one of the patients died from the infection.
For patients taking other kinds of anti-diabetic drugs, the frequency of Fournierโs disease is much lowerโonly 6 such cases have been reported in more than 30 years, a far cry from 12 cases in 5 years.
Basics of Glyxambi
Glyxambi (generic name empagliflozin linagliptin) is a SGLT2 inhibitor drug use to lower a diabetes patientโs blood sugar level. Empagliflozin is used to rid the bloodstream of glucose, and linagliptin regulates the bodyโs insulin levels after eating.
The first SGLT2 inhibitor was approved in 2013. Glyxambi is more recent, approved by the FDA only in January 2015. Glyxambi is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly. Glyxambi side effects also include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and unusual levels of fatigue or depression, among others.
Fournierโs gangrene has also been associated with ten other diabetes medications belonging to the SGLT2 inhibitor class, including Invokana, Jardiance, and more. The manufacturers of these drugs have been warned to add a risk of Fournierโs disease to their warning label.
Filing a Glyxambi Side Effects Lawsuit
If you or a loved one has suffered from the flesh eating infection Fournierโs disease after treatment with Glyxambi or another SGLT2 inhibitor drug, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot undo the pain and suffering caused by Glyxambi side effects, it can at least help to compensate for the financial damage caused by medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
