  • Why: Elizarraras claims Globe Life failed to safeguard sensitive customer information from a data breach.
  • Where: The Globe Life class action lawsuit was filed in Texas federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims insurance company Globe Life Inc. failed to safeguard sensitive customer information from a data breach that affected more than 850,000 individuals.

Plaintiff Denia Elizarraras filed the class action complaint against Globe Life on March 3 in Texas federal court. She alleges Globe Life neglected to prevent a data breach that resulted in unauthorized access to its information systems and the exposure of its customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, health data and other policy information.

Elizarraras alleges Globe Life used inadequate data security measures, including failing to encrypt customer information and not deleting data when it was no longer needed.

In addition, Elizarraras says the company failed to notify its customers about the data breach that it discovered around June 13, 2024.

According to the lawsuit, Globe Life initially filed a notice of the breach with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in October 2024, stating that over 5,000 customers’ data was exposed.

However, in January, Globe Life filed another notice stating that more than 850,000 customers’ information had been breached. Customers were not informed of the breach at all, Elizarraras claims, saying she found out about it through a news report.

Globe Life put its customers at risk, class action claims

Elizarraras wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who purchased life insurance policies from Globe Life and had their private information accessed or acquired by an unauthorized party in the data breach.

“Plaintiff and Class Members now face a lifetime risk of identity theft due to the nature of the information lost, which they cannot change, and which cannot be made private again,” the Globe Life class action says.

Elizarraras claims Globe Life is guilty of negligence, negligence per se, breach of fiduciary duty and breach of implied contract and also violated California’s Consumer Privacy Act and Consumer Records Act.

The plaintiff demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of actual and statutory damages of up to $750 per customer per incident for herself and all class members.

In 2024, the executives and directors of Globe Life were hit with a lawsuit alleging they ignored a workplace culture of sexual harassment and consistently reported artificially inflated profitability metrics for at least four years.
