The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent the following refunds in February to consumers who qualify to benefit from settlements made with the agency to resolve various claims.
Vision Path refunds
The FTC is sending Zelle payments to consumers who bought Hubble brand contact lenses from Vision Path Inc. and did not cash a previously sent check or accept a PayPal payment sent by the agency.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to resolve claims that Vision Path misled consumers by allegedly failing to properly verify prescription information and substituting Hubble brand lenses when they were not the prescribed brand.
The agency initially sent more than $1.7 million in refunds by checks in September 2022 and PayPal payments in May 2024.
Consumers who receive a Zelle payment will have the refund deposited directly into their bank accounts, according to the FTC.
First American Payment Systems refunds
The FTC is sending more than $2.6 million in checks to businesses enrolled with First American Payment Systems.
The refunds, which total 5,588 checks, are part of a settlement made with the FTC to end claims First American Payment Systems used misleading sales pitches and charged hidden fees.
Businesses that receive a check are asked to cash it within 90 days. The agency said it is also mailing claim forms to 16,181 businesses that may be eligible for a refund.
Passport Automotive Group refunds
The FTC is sending a second round of payments to consumers who purchased a car or truck from Washington, D.C.-based auto dealer Passport Automotive Group.
The agency originally sent more than $2.9 million in refunds in May 2023. However, since funds remain, it is sending more than $341,000 in total to consumers who accepted the initial payment.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to end claims Passport Automotive added hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars in so-called junk fees after advertising a specific price for its cars.
The FTC argued Passport Automotive charged junk fees for services such as certification, reconditioning or inspection while falsely claiming the fees were required.
Passport Automotive was also accused of discriminating against Black and Latino customers by charging them higher fees and financing costs.
Hey Dude refunds
The FTC is sending refund checks to consumers who purchased shoes from online shoe seller Hey Dude and who did not accept an initial PayPay payment sent in August 2024.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to end claims Hey Dude failed to inform customers about shipping delays and illegally sent gift cards instead of cash refunds for out-of-stock items.
The agency originally sent more than $1.2 million in refunds via PayPal payments. Consumers who did not accept the PayPal payment are asked to cash their checks within 90 days.
Fortnite refunds
The FTC is sending more than $72 million in refunds to Fortnite players across the United States who were charged for unwanted purchases and filled out a valid claim form by Oct. 8, 2024.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to resolve claims Epic Games unlawfully charged Fortnite players for unwanted purchases, let children rack up unauthorized charges without parental permission and blocked some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing content they had purchased.
Consumers who receive a check are advised to cash it within 90 days, while those who receive a PayPal payment are asked to accept it within 30 days.
Aqua Finance refunds
The FTC is sending more than $19.8 million in refunds to consumers who were given a loan from household water treatment funding company Aqua Finance for water filtering and softening products.
The refunds, which total nearly 30,000 checks, are part of a settlement made with the FTC to end claims Aqua Finance’s door-to-door dealers misled consumers about the terms of their loans and were pressured into signing documents they did not understand.
The agency argued consumers who ended up receiving a loan from Aqua Finance paid more in interest than they expected to and, in some cases, were unable to sell or refinance their homes as a result of the loans.
Consumers who receive a refund check are advised to cash it within 90 days.
T-Mobile refunds
The FTC is sending Zelle payments to consumers who had third-party charges added to their T-Mobile mobile phone bills prior to 2014 and who did not cash a previously sent check or accept a PayPal payment sent by the agency.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to resolve claims that T-Mobile allowed other companies to charge a monthly fee to its customers’ phone bills without their consent.
T-Mobile agreed to pay at least $90 million to settle the claims, according to the FTC, which said it originally sent refund checks totaling more than $24.3 million in February 2017 and July 2021.
Consumers who receive a Zelle payment will have the refund deposited directly into their bank accounts, according to the FTC.
Avast refunds
The FTC has started sending more than 3.6 million email notices to consumers who purchased antivirus software from Avast and may be eligible for a refund.
The refunds are part of a settlement made with the FTC to resolve claims Avast collected and sold users’ information to third parties without their consent.
Consumers may be eligible for a refund payment if they purchased antivirus software from Avast between August 2014 and January 2020, according to the FTC.
