  • Why: The automaker is initiating the recall due to a defect in the rear axle hub bolt that may lead to vehicle rollaway or loss of drive power.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Ford is recalling more than 103,000 F-150 pickup trucks due to a potential defect in the rear axle hub bolt that could result in vehicle rollaway or a loss of drive power.

The Ford F-150 truck recall affects certain 2023-2025 F-150 pickups equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design. The recall, announced on Aug. 8, applies to vehicles manufactured between Jan. 2, 2023, and May 21, 2025.

According to the recall, the axle hub bolt may fatigue and break, leading to damage to the axle hub splines. This defect could cause the vehicle to roll away when parked without the parking brake applied or result in a loss of drive power, both of which increase the risk of a crash.

“Both of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its recall notice.

Drivers can look out for warning signs, recall says

The NHTSA has highlighted that one of the warning signs of a faulty axle hub bolt is a clicking noise. If the bolt breaks, drivers may hear a rattling noise, indicating potential damage.

The axle hub bolts are crucial as they keep the wheel hubs attached to the vehicle’s axle, which connects the wheels to the drivetrain and supports the vehicle’s weight. The recall notice emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue promptly to prevent any potential accidents.

Ford is taking proactive steps to resolve the issue by replacing the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies free of charge, according to the recall notice.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification letters in phases, starting from Aug. 18 through May 22. These letters will provide instructions on how to proceed with the repairs.

Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford says there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this defect so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In late 2024, Ford recalled 12,000 Ford F-150 Lightning battery electric vehicles over a defect that can cause a loss of steering control.
