Ford EcoBoost class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co.
- Why: The Nelsons argue vehicles equipped with Ford EcoBoost engines are at risk of overheating and potentially catching fire, and that the automaker has failed to provide a remedy to fix the alleged defect.
- Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.
Ford Motor Company’s EcoBoost engines contain a “critical” defect that causes engine coolant to leak into the engine’s cylinders, a new class action lawsuit alleges.
Plaintiff’s Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson’s class action lawsuit claims the defect causes Ford vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engines to suffer from overheating, “catastrophic” engine failures and potential engine fires, even at low mileage.
“The presence of coolant within the cylinders of the engine, alone, can also result in power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure,” the Ford EcoBoost class action says.
Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson want to represent a class of California residents who have purchased a vehicle equipped with a Ford EcoBoost engine.
The Nelson’s also are seeking to represent a subclass of California residents under the state’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) and an implied warranty subclass of California residents who purchased or leased and took delivery in the state of any class vehicle.
Automaker failed to provide ‘effective’ fix to alleged Ford EcoBoost engine defect, class action claims
Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson argue Ford has failed to “provide an effective solution” to consumers who purchased a class vehicle containing an allegedly defective Ford EcoBoost engine.
Instead of replacing the engine block to remedy the alleged defect, Ford has “merely applied” “superficial stopgap, Band-Aid remedies,” such as recalibrating engine software and installing coolant level sensors, the Ford EcoBoost class action claims.
“Ford has not satisfactorily or effectively addressed the source of the defect for those consumers, including for those whose vehicles remain in warranty,” the Ford EcoBoost class action says.
In addition to allegedly violating the CLRA, the Nelson’s claim Ford is guilty of California breach of express and implied warranty, breach of implied warranty under the state’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and California’s Unfair Competition Law.
The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.
Ford recalled more than 500,000 of its Ford F-150 vehicles in June over worries a transmission issue with their transmissions could cause the vehicles to suddenly shift into first gear.

i have a 2013 escape that is constantly shutting down due to low coolant alert. The car goes into safe mode and can be driven at about five miles/hr. until the coolant level is restored, This is a safety hazard on an interstate highway. I have to carry antifreeze coolant in the vehicle because you get no warning that the problem occurs.
