Ford Motor Companyโs EcoBoost engines contain a โcriticalโ defect that causes engine coolant to leak into the engineโs cylinders, a new class action lawsuit alleges.ย
Plaintiffโs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelsonโs class action lawsuit claims the defect causes Ford vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engines to suffer from overheating, โcatastrophicโ engine failures and potential engine fires, even at low mileage.ย
โThe presence of coolant within the cylinders of the engine, alone, can also result in power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure,โ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย
Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson want to represent a class of California residents who have purchased a vehicle equipped with a Ford EcoBoost engine.ย
The Nelsonโs also are seeking to represent a subclass of California residents under the stateโs Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) and an implied warranty subclass of California residents who purchased or leased and took delivery in the state of any class vehicle.ย
Automaker failed to provide โeffectiveโ fix to alleged Ford EcoBoost engine defect, class action claims
Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson argue Ford has failed to โprovide an effective solutionโ to consumers who purchased a class vehicle containing an allegedly defective Ford EcoBoost engine.ย
Instead of replacing the engine block to remedy the alleged defect, Ford has โmerely appliedโ โsuperficial stopgap, Band-Aid remedies,โ such as recalibrating engine software and installing coolant level sensors, the Ford EcoBoost class action claims.ย
โFord has not satisfactorily or effectively addressed the source of the defect for those consumers, including for those whose vehicles remain in warranty,โ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย
In addition to allegedly violating the CLRA, the Nelsonโs claim Ford is guilty of California breach of express and implied warranty, breach of implied warranty under the stateโs Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and Californiaโs Unfair Competition Law.ย
The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.ย
Ford recalled more than 500,000 of its Ford F-150 vehicles in June over worries a transmission issue with their transmissions could cause the vehicles to suddenly shift into first gear.ย

231 thoughts onFord class action claims EcoBoost engines a fire risk
I own a 2018 Ford Edge with an Ecoboost 2.0L engine with 91,500 miles. I just recently found out (last week) there is coolant in my combustion chambers and turbo which means I need a new motor and turbo. Ford Waconia in MN wants $9600 for a new motor and the extended warranty company denied my claim.
I have a 2017 Ford mustang ecoboost. It has done 75000 miles and has smoke pouring out the back when I drive it. Itโs suspected to be a blow head gasket. I am trying to get Ford to pay for it as a manufacturing design defect but no luck so far.
Have a F150 2.7l ecoboost with 120,000 miles. Took exceptional care of maintenance. It suddenly had a complete power failure while driving and died in the middle of the road. Brought it to Ford and they said the coolant leaked into the engine and that the entire long block needs to be replaced. Possibly the AC compressor as well.
