Ford EcoBoost class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co.ย
  • Why: The Nelsons argue vehicles equipped with Ford EcoBoost engines are at risk of overheating and potentially catching fire, and that the automaker has failed to provide a remedy to fix the alleged defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

Ford Motor Companyโ€™s EcoBoost engines contain a โ€œcriticalโ€ defect that causes engine coolant to leak into the engineโ€™s cylinders, a new class action lawsuit alleges.ย

Plaintiffโ€™s Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelsonโ€™s class action lawsuit claims the defect causes Ford vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engines to suffer from overheating, โ€œcatastrophicโ€ engine failures and potential engine fires, even at low mileage.ย

โ€œThe presence of coolant within the cylinders of the engine, alone, can also result in power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson want to represent a class of California residents who have purchased a vehicle equipped with a Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

The Nelsonโ€™s also are seeking to represent a subclass of California residents under the stateโ€™s Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) and an implied warranty subclass of California residents who purchased or leased and took delivery in the state of any class vehicle.ย

Automaker failed to provide โ€˜effectiveโ€™ fix to alleged Ford EcoBoost engine defect, class action claims

Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson argue Ford has failed to โ€œprovide an effective solutionโ€ to consumers who purchased a class vehicle containing an allegedly defective Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

Instead of replacing the engine block to remedy the alleged defect, Ford has โ€œmerely appliedโ€ โ€œsuperficial stopgap, Band-Aid remedies,โ€ such as recalibrating engine software and installing coolant level sensors, the Ford EcoBoost class action claims.ย

โ€œFord has not satisfactorily or effectively addressed the source of the defect for those consumers, including for those whose vehicles remain in warranty,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

In addition to allegedly violating the CLRA, the Nelsonโ€™s claim Ford is guilty of California breach of express and implied warranty, breach of implied warranty under the stateโ€™s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and Californiaโ€™s Unfair Competition Law.ย

The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.ย

Ford recalled more than 500,000 of its Ford F-150 vehicles in June over worries a transmission issue with their transmissions could cause the vehicles to suddenly shift into first gear.ย

Barlow of Kershaw Talley Barlow PC; Mark P. Chalos, Annika K. Martin and Gabriel A. Panek of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP; Russell D. Paul, Abigail Gertner and Amey J. Park of Berger Montague PC; Patrick Newsom of Newsom Law PLC and Thomas P. Thrash and Will T. Crowder of Thrash Law Firm.ย

Yes, I did purchase a 2016 Edge with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine and last year the engine light came on after changing the spark plugs and cylinders hoping that would be the fix the light came back and after inspecting the car further, consulting with another mechanic and doing his due diligence he told me about the problem which you mentioned above and said I would have to change the engine. I reached out to Ford, Canada they washed their hands and told me I had to go to the dealership because they didnโ€™t have any programs to help me because the car was too old. I purchased the car in November 2022. The check engine light came on in June/July 2024. I have been discussing with the dealership but they are barely offering me anything, I will still have a large portion of my existing loan to pay plus pay for the other car. To put in another engine will still cost me how many thousands upfront which I donโ€™t have. I donโ€™t think I should be having to carry this burden for Fordโ€™s problem.

  5. Mike Huene says:

I have a 2016 Fusion with EcoBoost engine. Coolant began leaking into the engine requiring a very expensive head gasket repair. I opted to have the engine replaced. My son has a 2018 Fusion with EcoBoost engine and the same thing just happened. Coolant leaking into the engine. Our specific vehicles were not included in a recent recall for this exact problem. Would love to know how to get involved in the class action lawsuit.

I have a 2019 fusion eco boost and itโ€™s has been a NIGHTMARE! They have what they call a Campaign on it however itโ€™s limited to certain miles and time frame. I have a car I still owe $14000 on and can barely drive it. I thought Ford was a better company than this

We have a 2014 Ford F150 4ร—4 3.5litre Eco Boost engine. We took to dealership multiple times re: fan constantly running on high and they could find no problems. We were pulling our camper (well under towing limit) and it shut down completely with only a few seconds warning placing us in a dangerous situation on a 2 lane road on a curve. The problem was it was throwing out antifreeze. The coolant line between the turbo and motor block when towing placed the eco boost under pressure causing antifreeze to leak causing over heating situation. Several thousand dollars of repair and I no longer trust it. Would love to be in on the class action lawsuit even though my year is a 2014. Please advise.
