Ford EcoBoost class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co.ย
  • Why: The Nelsons argue vehicles equipped with Ford EcoBoost engines are at risk of overheating and potentially catching fire, and that the automaker has failed to provide a remedy to fix the alleged defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

Ford Motor Companyโ€™s EcoBoost engines contain a โ€œcriticalโ€ defect that causes engine coolant to leak into the engineโ€™s cylinders, a new class action lawsuit alleges.ย

Plaintiffโ€™s Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelsonโ€™s class action lawsuit claims the defect causes Ford vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engines to suffer from overheating, โ€œcatastrophicโ€ engine failures and potential engine fires, even at low mileage.ย

โ€œThe presence of coolant within the cylinders of the engine, alone, can also result in power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson want to represent a class of California residents who have purchased a vehicle equipped with a Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

The Nelsonโ€™s also are seeking to represent a subclass of California residents under the stateโ€™s Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) and an implied warranty subclass of California residents who purchased or leased and took delivery in the state of any class vehicle.ย

Automaker failed to provide โ€˜effectiveโ€™ fix to alleged Ford EcoBoost engine defect, class action claims

Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson argue Ford has failed to โ€œprovide an effective solutionโ€ to consumers who purchased a class vehicle containing an allegedly defective Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

Instead of replacing the engine block to remedy the alleged defect, Ford has โ€œmerely appliedโ€ โ€œsuperficial stopgap, Band-Aid remedies,โ€ such as recalibrating engine software and installing coolant level sensors, the Ford EcoBoost class action claims.ย

โ€œFord has not satisfactorily or effectively addressed the source of the defect for those consumers, including for those whose vehicles remain in warranty,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

In addition to allegedly violating the CLRA, the Nelsonโ€™s claim Ford is guilty of California breach of express and implied warranty, breach of implied warranty under the stateโ€™s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and Californiaโ€™s Unfair Competition Law.ย

The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.ย

Ford recalled more than 500,000 of its Ford F-150 vehicles in June over worries a transmission issue with their transmissions could cause the vehicles to suddenly shift into first gear.ย

Barlow of Kershaw Talley Barlow PC; Mark P. Chalos, Annika K. Martin and Gabriel A. Panek of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP; Russell D. Paul, Abigail Gertner and Amey J. Park of Berger Montague PC; Patrick Newsom of Newsom Law PLC and Thomas P. Thrash and Will T. Crowder of Thrash Law Firm.ย

  1. Patricia Collins says:

2015 Titanium destroyed by fire while under warranty. Ford has you contact their โ€œdepartment โ€ that handles this. Basically the department are all lawyers who promptly get rid of you. Dealers refuse to help.they were alerted in 2020 and claimed they never received any complaints about fires. Car only had 40,000 miles. Total trash. Now i have no car.

  2. Patricia Collins says:

2015 Titanium caught fire, Ford refused help even though it was under warranty.

  3. Mitch says:

We had a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with a 2.0L EcoBust engine. After 5 years and 103k miles, the engine was trash. Check engine light, misfires in cylinder #3, coolant lossโ€ฆ classic coolant intrusion. Unfortunately it was just outside the 100k extended warranty (of course) and our local Ford dealer recommended we trade it in for something else. LOL

Well, we did. For a Toyota RAV4. Not nearly as nice a car, but it got us home while the Edge left us stranded.

  5. Frank Jackman says:

I own a 2014 Escape SE with a 1.6L Ecoboost 4cyl with a band-aid coolant system fix. At 70,000 miles the clised-system transmission fried driving thru Arizona leaving us stranded for 4 weeks waiting for a replacement transmission.

  10. Rebecca says:

How do we join this class class action? We have a 2015 F150 eco-boost that we had to replace the engine at less than 70,000 miles. Which was not to go through the dealership as we had had services done there and our vehicle came back worse than my left it. Also, we had to wait about six months to even get eight Ford engine from the manufacturer because they were not readily available.

Please advise how to get involved to get some kind of reimbursement or compensation for this lemon of an engine. TIA

    1. Kris says:

I currently can not drive my 2018 Ford Edge Titanium because of a catastrophic event with the engine. In the past I have had a couple of coil packs/spark plugs replaced with suspicious residue that I now think was coolant. My coolant level drops but I do not see any signs of leaking on the floor. How do I get in on this lawsuit. I live in TN.
