Ford EcoBoost class action lawsuit overview:ย

  • Who: Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Co.ย
  • Why: The Nelsons argue vehicles equipped with Ford EcoBoost engines are at risk of overheating and potentially catching fire, and that the automaker has failed to provide a remedy to fix the alleged defect.ย
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.ย

Ford Motor Companyโ€™s EcoBoost engines contain a โ€œcriticalโ€ defect that causes engine coolant to leak into the engineโ€™s cylinders, a new class action lawsuit alleges.ย

Plaintiffโ€™s Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelsonโ€™s class action lawsuit claims the defect causes Ford vehicles equipped with the EcoBoost engines to suffer from overheating, โ€œcatastrophicโ€ engine failures and potential engine fires, even at low mileage.ย

โ€œThe presence of coolant within the cylinders of the engine, alone, can also result in power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution and contamination, and engine failure,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson want to represent a class of California residents who have purchased a vehicle equipped with a Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

The Nelsonโ€™s also are seeking to represent a subclass of California residents under the stateโ€™s Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) and an implied warranty subclass of California residents who purchased or leased and took delivery in the state of any class vehicle.ย

Automaker failed to provide โ€˜effectiveโ€™ fix to alleged Ford EcoBoost engine defect, class action claims

Plaintiffs Trevor Nelson and Sarah Nelson argue Ford has failed to โ€œprovide an effective solutionโ€ to consumers who purchased a class vehicle containing an allegedly defective Ford EcoBoost engine.ย

Instead of replacing the engine block to remedy the alleged defect, Ford has โ€œmerely appliedโ€ โ€œsuperficial stopgap, Band-Aid remedies,โ€ such as recalibrating engine software and installing coolant level sensors, the Ford EcoBoost class action claims.ย

โ€œFord has not satisfactorily or effectively addressed the source of the defect for those consumers, including for those whose vehicles remain in warranty,โ€ the Ford EcoBoost class action says.ย

In addition to allegedly violating the CLRA, the Nelsonโ€™s claim Ford is guilty of California breach of express and implied warranty, breach of implied warranty under the stateโ€™s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and Californiaโ€™s Unfair Competition Law.ย

The plaintiffs demand a jury trial and request declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, exemplary and statutory damages for themselves and all class members.ย

Ford recalled more than 500,000 of its Ford F-150 vehicles in June over worries a transmission issue with their transmissions could cause the vehicles to suddenly shift into first gear.ย

Barlow of Kershaw Talley Barlow PC; Mark P. Chalos, Annika K. Martin and Gabriel A. Panek of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP; Russell D. Paul, Abigail Gertner and Amey J. Park of Berger Montague PC; Patrick Newsom of Newsom Law PLC and Thomas P. Thrash and Will T. Crowder of Thrash Law Firm.ย

  1. Ken says:

I have 2016 Ford Edge SEL with 2.0 ecobokst engine. Cracked engine block at 105,000 miles due to what my mechanic termed a design flaw. Paid over $8,000 for new redesigned ford block then spent and additional $2500 for new injectors and ignition coils due to constant misfire codes. Wrote to Ford Customer Service who basically said since I didnโ€™t take it to a dealer I was sh-t out of luck. My car sat three days at a dealer for a 30 minute recall job. Guess we need a class action lawsuit in Texas.

  2. Christopher Glasgow says:

Had to sell 2016 for focus 1.0 ecoboost
One engine replaced at 54000 miles and second engine failed at 104000 miles.
Just paid off the car and two months later it sat in my driveway for over a year. Contacted ford but they were unwilling to help in anyway even though it is a real defect and plenty of people have been complaining for years on facebook.

  3. Tessa Shanks says:

2016 Escape with Ecoboost. Recent replacement of catalytic converter. Still losing power periodically. Purchased in IA, now a resident of CO. Would like to know if anything can/should be done as Iโ€™m looking to trade it.

I have a 2017 ford Escape 2.0 ecoboost with 36k miles that has a blown engine due to coolant leaking into cylinders sitting at the ford dealership. Quoted 10k for long block replacementโ€ฆI am 70 years old on a fixed income I donโ€™t have 10k to fix this on ร  car worth only a few thousand dollars at best. No trade in value. I would never buy another ford , they wonโ€™t stand behind their product or help with the repair costs.
This is a well known issue of a manufacturers defected engine and Ford needs to be held accountable.
Itโ€™s a safety risk for anyone driving one of their ecoboost cars

  5. Tracey Hankins says:

Please add me, I have 2023 Ford Explorer with the EcoBoost engine.

  6. M. Lucas says:

Please add me. Just purchased a 2014 Ford C max. It does have eco boost.

  7. Mary Valentino says:

I own a 2018 Ford Edge SEL with the 2.0L Eco-boost engine. I have 53,000 miles. My Engine light is on and the local repair shop says they got a P302 and P0316 message, which is cylinder misfire and coolant. They told me the coolant leaks into the cylinder and I have to take it to Ford for an engine replacement!! My Ford dealer canโ€™t even get me in until Oct or Dec. Iโ€™ve read that this is a known problem. My Basic Warranty expired at 5 years, I do have an extended Warranty, but it doesnโ€™t appear to cover an engine. What do I do?

  8. Veronica Castro says:

I have a 2018 Ford Focus eco boost 33,000 miles with the same issues. I have spent a lot already trying to fix it. Waste of money.

  9. Annette Mika says:

I have a 2020 Ford EDGE 2.0 Eco Boost. The engine failed at 43,000 Miles leaving us stranded on side of the freeway at night hours away from home. We had to call Triple A towing, tow vehicle to our home on a Sunday night as nothing was open. Then, had to tow the vehicle to Joe Myers Ford in Houston, TX after seeking a dealership that could start repairs to the Transmission sooner than our regular dealership which stated they were backlogged for three months before they could even look at our vehicle. Our regular dealership had a backlogged until March 2024 repairing vehicles due to the Transmission Recall.

Our insurance rep went to look at the vehicle and determined Ford was responsible for the Transmission Failure. Joe Myers Ford insisted that the damages to my vehicle were a result of a supposed wreck we had, which we did not. That Ford dealership held our Vehicle captive for four (4) months. My husband is an elderly, 100% disabled veteran whom required visits back and forth to doctors and hospital due to his illnesses the last 2 years. Understanding how desperately we needed our vehicle to help my sick husband, my insurance company cave as they understood my situation and paid $10K for the new transmission. Consequently, our insurance rates were raised. The whole situation put a bad taste in our mouths for Ford and its faulty defective product the Ford Edge which they take no blame for. Found out Ford will be stopping production of the Ford Edge in 2024 due to the defective transmissions which do not allow the owners to check the fluid, only suffer the consequences of Fordโ€™s faulty design. Funny thing is the dealership tried to get us to buy the 2024 Edge with same defects.

My elderly husband does not drive. When I drive the vehicle, I do notice problems with the EcoBoost when it shifts into gear. We truly need help recouping damages from Ford in Texas for their poorly designed products with faulty systems and dealerships that perform shoddy workmanship leaving fixed income consumers to bear the financial brunt of poorly designed vehicles.
