Ford F-150 oil consumption class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: A group of Ford F-150 owners filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company.
  • Why: The plaintiffs claim Ford F-150 trucks have an oil consumption defect.
  • Where: The Ford class action lawsuit was filed in Michigan federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims Ford Motor Company failed to disclose an oil consumption defect in certain F-150 trucks that causes the vehicles to consume engine oil at an excessive rate.

Plaintiffs Daniel Bryan and 11 others filed the class action complaint against Ford on Aug. 28 in Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the Ford F-150 oil consumption lawsuit, 2018-2020 F-150 trucks have a defect that prevents the engine from maintaining proper oil levels, leading to premature wear, stalling and even failure.

Plaintiffs claim owners must monitor the oil level more frequently than recommended in the owner’s manual and add more oil to the engine than is typically required to keep the engine properly lubricated.

Ford allegedly knew about the defect but failed to disclose it to consumers

The class action lawsuit claims the company received numerous complaints about the issue and issued technical service bulletins to dealerships but failed to inform consumers or provide a suitable repair or replacement.

The plaintiffs say Ford’s marketing of the F-150 as a durable and dependable vehicle is misleading, alleging Ford’s actions have caused them to suffer financial losses, including out-of-pocket expenses for additional engine oil and repairs, and diminished the value of their vehicles.

As a result, the plaintiffs are suing for violations of state consumer protection laws and fraudulent concealment. They are seeking certification of the class action lawsuit, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

In August, Ford recalled more than 103,000 F-150 pickup trucks due to a potential defect in the rear axle hub bolt that could result in vehicle rollaway or a loss of drive power. A Ford recall in May was issued for 312,000 vehicles, including the 2025 F-150, Ranger, Expedition, Bronco and Lincoln Navigator models, due to a defect in the electronic power brake assist.

McNamara and Madelyn Petersen of Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC; William H. Anderson of Handley Farah & Anderson PLLC; Jon Herskowitz of Baron & Herskowitz; and Steven G. Calamusa of Gordon & Partners P.A.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit is Bryan, et al. v. Ford Motor Company, Case No. 2:25-cv-12714-JJCG-KGA, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

  1. Rebecca Khan says:

I have 2019 f150 5.0 with the engine oil consumption problems which led me to have to spend 12k on rebuilt engine and still is not right. Burns through oil, shakes, low mpg and miss fires. Engine rebuilt 2 years ago and they still can’t figure out why the problems still. This Engine sucks and always loved ford but this truck has cost me so much more than prior ford trucks very disappointed

  2. Mark Huey says:

I bought a Ford f150 with 5.0 coyote engine used from dealer with only 62000 miles. But it has excessive oil consumption uses a quart of oil every 800 miles , what can I do.

  3. Dan O'Connor says:

I, as well own a 2018 F-150 with the oil consumption problem. I purchased mine used, not knowing of the issue, even though I did a bunch of research. My local dealer says all the recalls were performed on it with the exception of the new dipstick. When I asked what the length of the new dipstick should be, they could not tell me. I know that will not make a difference of how it uses oil, but I gots to know. Currently, I use a quart of oil about every 800-900 miles. I hope we can get some real closure on this. There is no excuse for knowing and then sweeping it under the rug. Shame on you, Ford.

  4. Donald K Meredith says:

I have a F150 that has this oil consumption problem how do I find out if my vehicle is covered in this action? 2018 model 164000 miles

  5. James Carr says:

I personally did not have any of this information until now but I was having an oil issue. I love my truck and was very proud to own it. As of Three weeks ago, my engine needed to be replaced and I didn’t know why. Luckily, I purchased the Ford Platinum ESP which took care of paying for the engine and labor. I am still waiting to get my truck back from the shop but now I am wondering if it will be worth it.
